The perfect novel and still my favourite of all time). <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3WRyxDH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><i>The Power of Now<\/i><\/strong> by Ekchard Tolle<\/a> (The only self help book that fundamentally changed my brain chemistry.) <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4oylbs2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><i>Everything I Know About Love <\/i><\/strong> by Dolly Alderton<\/a> (A memoir that consoled a broken heart better than anything, and a testament to the forms of love we overlook in pursuit of romance). I\u2019m going to take it as a given that the works of Shakespeare, Austen and both Shelleys changed everyone\u2019s life, so I&#8217;m omitting them from my list. Anyone who knows me, knows at least one Virginia Woolf novel has got to be in there, and for me it is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3LCkP5e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>The Waves<\/i><\/a><\/strong>, with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3LwNVD4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Between The Acts<\/i><\/a><\/strong> being a very close second. It\u2019s expected that any Literature graduate would go for Ulyssees, and masterpiece though it is, I am going to put in a novel by Joyce\u2019s pal, Djuna Barnes, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/47GSmns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Nightwood<\/i><\/a><\/strong>. It\u2019s just incomparable.<\/p>\n<p>I love short stories as a way to break into the writing styles of authors, particularly male ones for some reason, so I must put in some J.D. Salinger, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/47XtWF1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>For Esme &#8211; With Love and Squalor<\/i><\/a>.<\/strong> It is at this point Raymond Carver deserves an honourable mention, particularly <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3LYKMfc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>What We Talk About When We Talk About Love<\/i><\/a><\/strong>. In terms of poetry, Dave Berman\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3Xv3zkQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Actual Air<\/i><\/a><\/strong> is the key for lifting me out of a creative lull. I\u2019ve also cited Mina Loy\u2019s <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4p9XSom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Lost Lunar Baedeker<\/a><\/em><\/strong> as one of the best poetry collections, but again, honourable mentions to Margret Atwood and Anne Sexton for life changing poetry. Miranda July\u2019s art, films, short stories and novels have changed my life since my early 20s, so naturally, I was deeply and powerfully moved by<strong> <em><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/445ob71\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">All Fours<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, I don\u2019t know a single woman who wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Jaime Carmody<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><i>Digital Marketing Specialist <\/i><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-269826\" src=\"https:\/\/www.russh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Books-that-changed-my-life.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.russh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Books-that-changed-my-life.jpeg 1200w, https:\/\/www.russh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Books-that-changed-my-life-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.russh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Books-that-changed-my-life-1024x683.jpeg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Every so often I find myself reading books I didn\u2019t know I was ready for, each one a different lens on how to live and feel in the world. <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/49RbZuc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>The Position of Spoons <\/em><\/strong>by Deborah Levy<\/a> found me in a season of stillness. Her essays on art, womanhood and attention reminded me that the act of noticing can be its own form of creation. <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/44bPVH5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Surrounded by<\/em><em> Idiots<\/em><\/strong> by Thomas Erikson<\/a> hit like a wake-up call. Suddenly every confusing interaction, every clash of personalities, had a language I could understand. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/447MZew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Good Material <\/a><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/447MZew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">by Dolly Alderton<\/a> landed messy and hilarious, heartbreak in full view and was a good reminder that getting over someone rarely looks like a neat story. <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3WW57V0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Not That Kind of Girl<\/em> by Lena Dunham<\/a> is an essay collection on ambition, fear, growing up and owning your flaws. <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4p9vNNS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>All I Ever Wanted Was to Be Hot<\/em><\/strong> by Lucinda Price<\/a> interrogates the cultural obsession with beauty and body image, asking what it really means to feel \u201cenough\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Sophia Serafin<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><i>Implementation Manager<\/i><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-269970\" src=\"https:\/\/www.russh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Reformation-Favourite-Brand-Navi-Top.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.russh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Reformation-Favourite-Brand-Navi-Top.png 1200w, https:\/\/www.russh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Reformation-Favourite-Brand-Navi-Top-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/www.russh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Reformation-Favourite-Brand-Navi-Top-1024x683.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m always choosing a new book based on my mood or emotional craving. You\u2019ll find me trawling recommendations on Goodreads or scrolling through old screenshots in my camera roll to find the perfect fit. But there are a few (seven, to be exact) that I hold as pillars &#8211; the ones that helped me understand what I actually enjoy, even as I stay open to newness.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3WVJ54B\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><i>Bergdorf Blondes<\/i><\/strong> by Plum Sykes<\/a> was my gateway into sharp, witty writing that\u2019s full of absurdity, and most importantly, fashion references. <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4nUiG1Y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Julia Fox\u2019s<strong><i> Down the Drain<\/i><\/strong><\/a> reminded me that rawness and reinvention are their own kind of art (listen to the AudioBook for the ultimate experience). Similarly, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/43Y3cmA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Patti Smith\u2019s <strong><i>Just Kids<\/i><\/strong><\/a> made me ache for that kind of all-consuming creative devotion &#8211; and for unconventional forms of friendship and love. <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/48eC2u4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><i>All Fours<\/i><\/strong> by Miranda July<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4r0Ofdc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><i>Insatiable<\/i><\/strong> by Daisy Buchanan<\/a> both awoke me to the ways desire, hunger and control can blur &#8211; they answered questions about womanhood I\u2019d always been searching for. <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4i9EPrZ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><i>My Year of Rest and Relaxation<\/i><\/strong><\/a> felt like reading a quiet rebellion; Ottessa Moshfegh\u2019s reminded me that sometimes you need to disappear to come back sharper. And <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4i2Kosn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><i>Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow<\/i><\/strong> by Gabrielle Zevin<\/a> ties it all together &#8211; a story that made me treasure how important it is to build a world with people who truly see and challenge you.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Kirsty Thatcher<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><i>Digital Editor<\/i><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-269976\" src=\"https:\/\/www.russh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/best-books.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.russh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/best-books.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.russh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/best-books-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.russh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/best-books-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I was trawling through my book shelf for this piece, and realised the best books I\u2019ve ever read are all fairly intense. But I think they all represent very pivotal times in my life. <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4nR4J5b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><i>The Midnight Library<\/i><\/strong> by Matt Haig<\/a> is one I think of often \u2013 it perfectly encapsulates what it\u2019s like to be in your mid-20s, and feel like there are a million potential avenues your life could take. <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4p2gAhu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><i>Sorrow and Bliss<\/i><\/strong> by Meg Mason<\/a> is one of the most heartbreaking books I\u2019ve ever read, but also manages to be unbelievably funny. A rare balance to strike. Similarly, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3WZ0FES\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><i>Heartsick <\/i><\/strong>by Jessie Stephens<\/a> is SO sad. Take it from me, read it after a breakup with caution. And lastly, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4p5bxgh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><i>Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine<\/i><\/strong>, by Gail Honeyman<\/a>. Harry Potter has to be in there. As a kid who grew up with two ESL parents, my English literacy and desire to read was lacking and below my peers. But discovering <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/43xWqnw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the <strong><i>Harry Potter<\/i><\/strong> books<\/a> when I was 10 changed all that. The first time I read <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3LFfYA7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><i>Candy<\/i><\/strong> by Luke Davies<\/a> was during a very formative period in my life, and while it\u2019s not strictly a morality tale, it certainly served as one when I read it. <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3JKLnAH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><i>The Barefoot Investor<\/i><\/strong> by Scott Pape<\/a> was the first book I read that truly drilled in the importance of starting early when investing. <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4pdskhn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><i>The Bloody Chamber<\/i> <\/strong>by Angela Carter<\/a> showed me that genre-heavy books can still be meaningful and have an impact. The first book that made me fall in love with writing and storytelling was <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/49dNreO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><i>The Great Gatsby <\/i><\/b>by F. Scott Fitzgerald<\/a>. I used to despise writing and reading growing up, after finding it challenging with my dyslexia, but something in the symbolism and metaphors, and the creative ways you could tell a story in this book unlocked a new love for it. <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/49SOtwZ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Clarice Lispector\u2019s <strong><i>Agua Viva <\/i><\/strong><\/a>\u2013 there is a theme to the books I like \u2013 as this book is a meditation on life and time and Lispector trying to catch the present in written word with every page she writes. It&#8217;s very poetic the way she turns the individual experience into a collective one. Another was <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/49kvWcW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><i>The Hare with Amber Eyes <\/i><\/strong>by Edmund de Waal<\/a>, a family memoir on the Ephrussi family that broadened my love for history and the multiple ways a story can be told through one book. And the book that made me cry for the first time was <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4nR04jt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Morris Gleitzman\u2019s series of <strong><em>Once, Then and After<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.
