Drawn first to his sisters\u2019 party rituals and the vampires of Underworld<\/em>, Sean Brady \u2013 the Sydney-side MUA \u2013 taught himself makeup in lockdown and swears his doppelg\u00e4nger is Lindsay Lohan.<\/p>\n

Who or what introduced you to makeup?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I started being interested in makeup when I was a kid, I would stay up late and watch FTV while my family was asleep. I loved watching my sisters getting ready for parties when they were teenagers. Finally, during lockdown, I really started to play with makeup on myself and my partner.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s been your personal experience with beauty?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I think initially it was a very internal experience \u2013 a gathering of everything I had seen or experienced, and eventually, I trusted myself enough to start exploring it.<\/p>\n

Was there an artist early on that inspired you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I was very inspired by female heroines in film and TV \u2013 the makeup as a part of the character. I loved the vampires in Underworld<\/em>, Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth, Scully in X Files<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Who do you look up to right now?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Of course, Pat McGrath, plus Thomas De Kluyver and Isamaya Ffrench. They all have very different touches in the same world of beauty and I think that\u2019s what resonates with me \u2013 the individualised perspective.<\/p>\n

How would you describe your makeup artistry ethos?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Do what feels correct for the person\u2019s face (in spite of any reference) and find a muse. People are more interesting than anything you can create, so find your harmony in that.<\/p>\n

You\u2019re self-taught, aren\u2019t you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Self-taught. Though I wouldn\u2019t mind doing an SFX course\u2026<\/p>\n

Tell me about a moment that has defined your career thus far?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know if I necessarily believe in defining moments. As an artist I feel like the dial is always moving. When I create something I never thought I could is when I feel most satisfied.<\/p>\n

What is the purpose of makeup?<\/strong><\/p>\n

To mirror what\u2019s inside or outside oneself. To be beautiful, to be sad, to be angry and to show love.<\/p>\n

How would you describe your aesthetic in three words?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Evolving, considered, hopeful.<\/p>\n

If you could swap bodies with any makeup artist for a day \u2013 living or dead \u2013 who would it be?<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is a tough one. We lost a whole generation of incredible gay artists to HIV \u2013 so many talents. We see their work on mood boards from club nights at Studio 54, or a glamazon on the cover of a soft-core porn magazine. It was different then, they weren\u2019t referencing, they were the reference.<\/p>\n

The best makeup look of all time is\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pat\u2019s creations for Galliano\u2019s Dior. Not one specific look, but the world she created around it.<\/p>\n

And the best film makeup?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Oh dear, you\u2019re killing me with these questions. Probably the original Dracula<\/em>. An out the gate choice, but it still haunts to this day.<\/p>\n

Any makeup rules that annoy you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I wouldn\u2019t say it annoys me, but I\u2019m not a mascara fan generally.<\/p>\n

If you could only have five products in your kit, what would they be?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I can do three! M.A.C Cosmetics Face and Body foundation, a black eyeliner and mauve lipstick (you can use it anywhere).<\/p>\n

What do you think is more important \u2013 technical skills or having a creative vision?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Both are equally important; a vision is nothing without execution. But you can \u2018fake\u2019 your way through till you have both, it\u2019s time on the track that really helps. I needed a lot.<\/p>\n

What does your creative process look like?<\/strong><\/p>\n

When met with a brief or a face, I paint in my head \u2013 I close my eyes and think. I\u2019m luckily one of those people that can see clear pictures in my mind, I\u2019m not sure what I\u2019d do otherwise. If it\u2019s too difficult to relay that information, I\u2019ll do a mock up on Photoshop or chop up my own past work.<\/p>\n
