It&#8217;s been shown to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eatingwell.com\/best-nutrient-to-reduce-your-risk-of-colorectal-cancer-11721769\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reduce your risk of colorectal cancer<\/a>. It helps you feel fuller and more satiated. It feeds your beneficial bacteria and keeps your gut happy. There&#8217;s even evidence that it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eatingwell.com\/best-nutrient-to-reduce-your-risk-of-colorectal-cancer-11721769\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">could reduce insulin resistance<\/a>. In short, there plenty of good and highly important reasons to eat fibre \u2013 and lots of it.<\/p>\n<p>But for some people, fibre might actually make you feel worse. It can feel absolutely baffling trying to do the right thing \u2013 actively increasing your fibre intake for gut health \u2013 only to be met with pain, bloating and digestive distress. If this sounds like you, just know the problem is common, and there is a solution.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Why might some people feel worse after fibrous food?<\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;<span id=\"p3R_mc1\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">It might surprise some people, but fibre isn\u2019t always well<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">&#8211;<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">tolerated<\/span><\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">\u2014<\/span><\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">especially if <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">there\u2019s an underlying gut issue,&#8221; says <a href=\"https:\/\/jessicasepel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jessica Sepel, nutritionist and founder of JSHealth<\/a>. &#8220;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">If your gut microbiome is out of balance or you\u2019re <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">dealing with a condition like IBS or SIBO, fibre can actually worsen symptoms.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Fibre and healthy gut bacteria have a symbiotic relationship. Fibre is a source of food and nutrients for the healthy bacteria that helps us thrive. And in turn, healthy gut bacteria helps to breakdown and digest fibrous food. So, if you have one without the other, it can cause an imbalance. Additionally, fibre can contribute to feeding &#8216;bad&#8217; gut bacteria.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"p3R_mc1\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">&#8220;If someone has an overgrowth of the \u2018bad\u2019 bugs, fibre <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">can exacerbate bloating, discomfort or irregularity,&#8221; says Sepel. &#8220;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">That\u2019s<\/span><\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">because fibre acts as a prebiotic, feeding both the beneficial and less <\/span><\/span>desirable bacteria in your gut.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Then of course, there are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S193131281830266X#:~:text=There%20are%20concerns%2C%20however%2C%20that,for%20individuals%20with%20irritable%20bowel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">those who suffer with inflammatory conditions like Crohn&#8217;s, IBD or ulcerative colitis<\/a>.\u00a0Research suggests this is because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eatingwell.com\/article\/8007538\/research-eating-fiber-ibd-symptoms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">some people with inflammatory gut diseases are missing the microbes<\/a> that help them digest and ferment certain kinds of fibre. These folks will need to take extra care with what they eat as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eatingwell.com\/article\/8007538\/research-eating-fiber-ibd-symptoms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sometimes certain fibrous foods can exacerbate their conditions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"p3R_mc2\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">How can you improve the way your digestive system reacts to fibre?<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If you&#8217;re looking to improve you the way your body handles fibre, there are a few thing you can do. But it&#8217;s important to go slow and look at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.russh.com\/how-to-improve-your-gut-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fixing your overall gut health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"p3R_mc1\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">&#8220;Introducing too much fibre <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">too quickly<\/span><\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">\u2014<\/span><\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">particularly from supplements<\/span><\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">\u2014<\/span><\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">can be a shock to the system, <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">especially if someone isn\u2019t used to a high<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">&#8211;<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">fibre diet,&#8221; says Sepel. <span id=\"p3R_mc2\" class=\"markedContent\">&#8220;I always focus on strengthening the gut first.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is especially true if your problems are being caused by a condition like SIBO, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/small-intestinal-bacterial-overgrowth\/diagnosis-treatment\/drc-20370172\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">can require antibiotics to treat effectively<\/a> in some cases. On the whole, focusing on increasing your probiotic intake is key. Additionally nutrients like glutamine can help to both support rebuild the gut lining.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also important to ensure you&#8217;re eating foods that will assist in gut nourishment and repair to support the increased probiotic intake.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"p3R_mc2\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">&#8220;I also <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">ad<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">just diets to include more gut<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">&#8211;<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">loving foods,&#8221; says Sepel. &#8220;Once the gut is functioning <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">well would I gradually introduce more fibre<\/span><\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">\u2014<\/span><\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">slowly and through whole foods first, <\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">like lea<\/span><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><span tabindex=\"0\">fy greens, nuts, seeds, legumes, oats and whole grains.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>As for those with inflammatory conditions, you&#8217;ll need to see a doctor if you haven&#8217;t already.<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4930425\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Cutting out fibre entirely is not a sustainable solution longterm<\/a>, so proper medical advice to effectively manage your condition is critical. Also, not everyone with an inflammatory condition will react in the same way to certain foods. Everyone is different here and the situation is dynamic.
