In a move that has left her admirers both puzzled and intrigued, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the creative genius behind Fleabag, is diving into the deep blue sea with her latest venture: narrating and producing a two-part documentary about octopuses. Yes, you read that correctly – octopuses. The project, aptly titled Octopus!, is set to premiere globally on Amazon Prime Video this spring.

This collaboration between Waller-Bridge‘s Wells Street Films and Jigsaw Productions marks a significant departure from her previous work. However, considering her knack for turning the mundane into the extraordinary, it’s not surprising that she’s taken on the challenge of making octopus life both relatable and riveting. Here’s everything we know so far…

Why is she doing it?

One can’t help but wonder what inspired Waller-Bridge to swap the complexities of human relationships for the enigmatic world of cephalopods. Perhaps after spending two seasons of Fleabag dissecting the intricacies of modern love and existential angst, she felt the natural progression was to explore creatures that have three hearts and blue blood. Perhaps she’s just a fan of the species?

Vernon Sanders, head of television at Amazon MGM Studios, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “This charming and unique story will shine a light on these immensely special and intelligent animals through Phoebe’s endearing and comedic lens.”

What is it about?

The octopus documentary promises to follow the Giant Pacific Octopus from birth to death, offering viewers an intimate look into the lives of these intelligent and mysterious creatures. In true Waller-Bridge fashion, we can likely expect a narrative that’s both poignant and peppered with wit. If you’re still scarred from the post-watch depression of My Octopus Teacher, hopefully this one will be a smidge happier.

Who else is part of the project?

Adding to the project’s allure is the involvement of Emmy-nominated actor and comedian Tracy Morgan, who is set to feature in a series of interviews. Morgan’s unique brand of humour combined with Waller-Bridge’s sharp storytelling is sure to make for some entertaining narration.

]]>
There are stories that refuse to be told, legends too grand to be contained within the frame of a single film. Led Zeppelin – the iconic English rock band – has long been one of them.

For decades, the band existed in archival fragments: grainy footage, whispered myths, the sonic wreckage of a musical revolution. But now we are finally being given more: Becoming Led Zeppelin, the first fully authorised documentary on the band.

What is the film about?

The documentary is an attempt to bottle the lightning of the band. The film’s creators, Bernard MacMahon and Allison McGourty, didn’t just piece together a biography—they entered the labyrinth of Led Zeppelin’s own making.

For the film, MacMahon and McGourty unearthed lost tapes and unseen footage – Zeppelin’s voice, resurrected. John Bonham, the band’s explosive late drummer and heartbeat, narrates through old interviews, his words capturing the reckless, golden energy of their youth.

The film ends in 1970, as Zeppelin stands on the precipice of its most chaotic, triumphant years. It chooses not to linger on the excess, the tragedy, or the descent. Instead, Becoming Led Zeppelin is the moment before the myth became untouchable.

How did it come about?

After garnering the trust of the band’s remaining members, guitarist Jimmy Page led the filmmakers to the banks of the Thames, where Zeppelin first found its roar in a quiet boathouse.

Next, they courted John Paul Jones, the band’s understated genius, who initially dismissed the idea of a documentary outright. But one screening of American Epic changed his mind. Finally, there was Plant, perhaps the hardest to convince. A musician who had spent the last few decades chasing new sounds, new adventures, new lives. But nostalgia has its own pull. Three meetings later, he was in.

When will it be released?

Becoming Led Zeppelin will be released in cinemas from 8 February 2025 in Australia.

‘Make Me Famous’ is the new documentary about the New York downtown art scene https://www.russh.com/make-me-famous-documentary/ Mon, 20 Feb 2023 00:19:50 +0000 https://www.russh.com/?p=178261 Who was Edward Brezinski?

The post ‘Make Me Famous’ is the new documentary about the New York downtown art scene appeared first on RUSSH.

The downtown art scene in New York in the 70s and 80s brings up a few recurring faces and names. No doubt you’re familiar with a handful of artists making names for themselves around that time. Basquiat. Haring. Wojnarowicz. But of course, others were around too. Others who you might not have heard of. Director Brian Vincent is about to unearth one of those artists’ legacies in his documentary Make Me Famous. And that artist’s name is Edward Brezinski. This is the story of a painter who came up with all the big names but never saw his own up in lights. Or is he still yet to?

We’ve had our fair share of 80s New York content as of late, with Nan Goldin’s documentary, All the Beauty and the Bloodshed and I must say, it just leaves me craving more. Make Me Famous will show some of the art legends honing their craft and letting loose at Club 57. We’ll also see the work and art of Edward Brezinski and his Magic Gallery which he ran from his apartment in the East Village. Debauchery ensues.

The trailer gives you all the grungy and glamorous photos of the period and quotes from greats who were there. It also poses a fascinating question. What if Edward Brezinski is actually still alive? Prices of art by the likes of Basquiat and Keith Herring rose astronomically after their deaths, leaving other artists to wonder, “what if.” In the trailer, we hear people pondering the question “was Edward Brezinski capable of faking his own death?” This sets a new tone for the documentary, ushering it into a new genre entirely, filled with unanswered questions and mystique. So, that begs the question, did he become universally recognised posthumously? Not so far, but his work is showing in the MoMA and there’s this documentary out, so maybe it’s not such a far cry.

Make Me Famous premiered in London on the 17 February at the Bertha Dochouse and will be showing until 1 March. Preview the trailer for the film below.

Rihanna is giving us the multi-platform experience, with a documentary on her Super Bowl performance reportedly in the works https://www.russh.com/rihanna-superbowl-documentary/ Mon, 28 Nov 2022 22:45:21 +0000 https://www.russh.com/?p=173386 This is huge.

After too many years living in a Rihanna drought, the queen is finally making up for lost time and giving us all the things at once. Following on from the confirmation that new music is on the way, as well as the news that she is performing at the Super Bowl halftime show in 2023, it only make sense that Ri continuous to expand her multi-platform offering, with an insider revealing that a documentary on the forthcoming performance is reportedly in the works. Is this Rihanna’s Homecoming moment?

Rihanna will perform next year’s momentous Super Bowl halftime show at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale Arizona on February 12, to fans’ delight. This will be Rihanna’s first time performing at the Super Bowl and her first public performance in five years. So it’s not surprising Apple TV+ has hatched a deal with the megastar to document the journey. The documentary will be similar to Netflix’s Lady Gaga’s Five Foot Two expose about the pop provocateur’s preparation ahead of her halftime show, and Beyonce’s Homecoming about her monumental 2018 Coachella performance.

The insider revealed, “She will be recorded during rehearsals and meetings in the lead-up to the big night and give an insight into what her life is really like now that she is returning to pop as a mum.

“There is a massive appetite for everything to do with Rihanna, especially as this will be her major return to the stage for the first time in years,” the source added of Rihanna’s Super Bowl documentary.

Are we getting new music?

So, does this mean we should all be expecting a new RiRi album coming soon? Unfortunately, the Super Bowl headliner has made it known that the Super Bowl and her music should be treated separately.

Although we got two recent tracks from the Black Panther score, Rihanna firmly told the Associated Press, “Super Bowl is one thing. New music is another thing. Do you hear that, fans?”

Of her decision to perform, Rihanna is only in if it’s for something big. “If I’m going to leave my baby, I’m going to leave my baby for something special,” Rihanna said of her decision to perform. “It was now or never for me.”

The Larry David Story: Everyone’s favourite comedian is getting the documentary treatment https://www.russh.com/the-larry-david-story-documentary/ Thu, 17 Feb 2022 04:15:00 +0000 https://www.russh.com/?p=153499 Because there's never too much Larry David to stream.

Today is looking pretty, pretty, pretty good as HBO has announced a two-part documentary on Seinfeld co-creator Larry David will premiere in March. Titled The Larry David Story, the feature will centre on the career of the multi-award winning writer and comedian.

What is The Larry David Story about?

In the trailer for the documentary – which you can watch below – David speaks of his unexpected rise to fame and how as a 25-year-old he was unsure of what to do with his life.

“I never thought of myself as funny,” explains David. “Anything I was associated with that could be successful was a shock. I didn’t know what I wanted to do, so what do you do when you’re talking and people are laughing at you? Comedy.”

Throughout the course of the documentary, David speaks candidly with old friend and Seinfeld director Larry Charles about his personal and professional life, taking viewers on a journey through his high and low points. The 74-year-old recalls moments on his undulating path to success and shares his personal insights on the world.

“My mother would call me up and go, ‘Larry, do they like you? Do they tell you you’re doing a great job?’” David says in the trailer “Yeah, Ma, they like me. The show is No. 1 in the country.”

Of course, the show David is referring to is Seinfeld, which he co-created with Jerry Seinfeld and acted as executive producer for the first seven seasons of the sitcom. Following on from this success, he created Curb Your Enthusiasm, in which he stars as a semi-fictionalised version of himself focusing on his ingrained neuroses and the everyday goings of society. Since the pilot premiered in 1999, David has either written or co-written every episode of the comedy which features frequent appearances from fellow comedians, including Richard Lewis and Jeff Garlin.

Where can I watch the documentary in Australia?

The Larry David Story is premiering in the USA on March 1, but an Australian release date and streaming service is still to be confirmed. Yet as Curb Your Enthusiasm is streamed on Binge, it’s likely the service will also pick up the documentary so avid fans can enjoy another David-centric show.

A new documentary on the reality of life as Grace Kelly is here to correct the narrative https://www.russh.com/grace-kelly-documentary/ Tue, 30 Mar 2021 02:00:49 +0000 https://www.russh.com/?p=124605 Drawing the curtain back on the real life lived by the Princess of Monaco.

The post A new documentary on the reality of life as Grace Kelly is here to correct the narrative appeared first on RUSSH.

Grace Kelly. The name itself screams true royalty – and royalty she most certainly was. One of the most prominent and enduring names in Hollywood history and the epitome of glamour, the film and TV star was in a league of her own. While from the outside, her life certainly looked like the ultimate fairytale; a new documentary on the real and widely unknown realities of the life Grace Kelly lived is here to correct the narrative.

Titled, Grace Kelly: The Missing Millions; the documentary explores how an actress of her calibre and member of Monaco’s Royal Family, was left with so little. The story begins right at the beginning; tracing Kelly’s career from her teenage years in Philadelphia to her tragic death in Europe. Along the way, we gain insight into the many ways in which Kelly was uncompensated for her work, as well as the widely unknown dowry she paid to marry the man she loved.

Novelist and playwright Bonnie Greer; history professor Katie Williams; and wealth adviser Gemma Godfrey are some of the key contributors in the Grace Kelly documentary. Godfrey in particular, has studied Kelly’s financial history – providing unique insight into the actresses privileged financial upbringing in Philadelphia; to where her fortune ultimately ended up.

“In this documentary, for the first time ever these types of documents have not only been accessed but brought together to build this picture of her financial position, which is absolutely fascinating,” Godfrey shared in an interview.

Elaborating further on some of her more surprising discoveries, Godfrey said; “The thing that surprised me most … it’s the fact that she had to pay to be a princess.”

“That was quite shocking because obviously the way that the story is usually told is that she built up this fantastic career in Hollywood, then of course she got whisked off her feet and then got access to huge amounts of wealth.”

Although the documentary certainly drops some historical truth bombs about the Oscar-winner’s life, one thing Godfrey, Greer and Williams were unable to get their hands on was Kelly’s will – which, would help complete a significant piece of the puzzle.

The Grace Kelly: The Missing Millions documentary is not yet available to watch in Australia, but stay tuned for more details on where you’ll be able to catch the film.

Netflix’s new film ‘The Remix: Hip Hop X Fashion’ unpacks representation in the fashion industry https://www.russh.com/the-remix-hip-hop-x-fashion-netflix/ Tue, 28 Jul 2020 02:00:36 +0000 https://www.russh.com/?p=103248 'The Remix: Hip Hop x Fashion' explores the way hip hop and streetwear - a phenomenon fortified by black and brown creatives has been infiltrated by the fashion industry at large, and the impact it has had.

After being released 2019 and winning multiple awards for the production, ‘The Remix: Hip Hop x Fashion’ made its Netflix debut, on July 22. The fashion documentary was directed and produced by Farah X and Lisa Cortés and explores the way streetwear – a phenomenon fortified by black and brown creatives has been infiltrated by the fashion industry at large, and the impact it has had.

Predominantly championing women in hip hop, the film unpacks the monumental cultural moments that women in hip hop inevitably were part of or behind and focuses the lens on the impact specifically Black women have had on the cultural plains where hip hop and fashion intersect.

The 67-minute documentary features Dapper Dan, Mimi Valdes, Bevy Smith, and Kerby Jean-Raymond of Pyer Moss and takes viewers on a journey that sheds light on the history of hip hop and fashion, serving as a reminder of the way we have viewed what is now the most popular genre in the world throughout history, and what has changed in todays landscape.

Dapper Dan explains this well, with the film touching on the past when his boutiques were raided for infringing on the copyright of luxury house names in the 1980’s, to now having the opportunity to collaborate with the same brands in the present. In an interview with Revolt TV, he says, “What we need to understand is that our designs and what we do is going to be appropriated. Appropriation takes place in all cultures. But, all cultures don’t get the financial and economic benefit of it. That’s what’s changed,”.

With hip hop being a male-dominated genre, it feels only fitting for Cortés to shift the lens onto the women who were behind so many male rappers iconic looks, starting with Misa Hylton, Image Architect and Entrepreneur. Hylton explains that Hip Hop led her to fashion. She found herself imagining styling artists, and after working with Sean “Diddy” Combs on a Jodeci music video, began her styling career which lead her to be behind some of the most prolific looks in hip hop history as we know it. Another notable woman in the industry is April Walker, Designer and Founder of Walker Wear. who, after meeting Dapper Dan in his Harlem store, left inspired and wanting to recreate what Dan was doing in Brooklyn. After anonymously founding Walker Wear and achieving mainstream success, Walker came forward as the pioneer behind one of hip hop cultures most iconic brands.

When discussing her intention for the film, Cortés told Revolt TV, “We all know about the people in front. But, I love the synergy of the people who helped an artist define who they are.”

‘The Remix: Hip Hop x Fashion’ is available to stream on Netflix now.

“Anonymity is very important to me.”

Martin Margiela has not shown his face publicly during the course of his 20 year career. Instead, the revolutionary and legendary designer chose to let his work speak for itself. “I always wanted to have my name linked to the product I created, not to the face I have.”

Directed by Reiner Holzemer the feature-length documentary gives insight into the mind of the usually guarded designer. With access to his notes, his drawings, his archives and personal effects we are given a look into the elusive life and extraordinary mind of one of fashion’s greats.

The documentary features interviews by Jean-Paul Gaultier, Carine Roitfeld and fashion historian Olivier Saillard. Allowing Margiela to be represented through his own words, and through the lens of those that knew him best. Often referred to as “the Banksy of fashion”, the Belgian-born designer started his career assisting Gaultier, before establishing his eponymous label in Paris in 1988. Throughout his career he produced both haute couture and ready-to-wear collections that continued to push the bounds of what fashion meant, how clothing was to be worn, and just what a runway show could look like. He then went on to become Creative Director of womenswear at Hermès (from 1997 – 2003).

Our world is shifting beneath our feet, and the fashion industry is quick to adjust. Something Margiela knew all too well. “There are different needs in the fashion world and I am not sure I can feed them,” he tells.

The documentary – Martin Margiela: In His Own Words – is available to view via iTunes from April 10th. A groundbreaking and intimate look inside the world of one of the more private people in fashion. You now have greater reason to stay inside, and stay in bed.

Or it’s available as part of Melbourne International Film Festival which runs from August 6 until August 23.
