It seems as though for most of us, travel still sits within the realm of lucid daydreams. With most borders still remaining closed and populations kept close knit, sunrises off the coastlines of Mexico and opulent ice blue waters become the warmest hallucinations. Here we have RUSSH friend and dear family, designer and artist Alexandra Sheehan sends us her sun blissed love from the coastlines of Oaxaca.

Sasha

Tell us a little about the Oaxacan coast?

Deeply giving and vibrant. The energy is intoxicating, the people are mellow and warmhearted, the experiences so comically wild they’re almost Lynch-ian. My imagination on the coast is completely unfettered, and there is always, always, something left to be discovered.

Sasha

What was your favourite moment from the trip?

Skinny dipping in the bioluminescence at night or hearing whale sonar underwater in the middle of the ocean.

Sasha

What are your favourite things to do on holiday?

Eat, zoom around on the scooter, explore the markets, play chess with my partner Sam, watch the sunset and drink Piñadas.

Sasha

What’s your perfect travel outfit?

Cotton cargo pants, an oversized white tee with a high ponytail. Alternatively, a thong bikini bottom, spf 50 and pearl necklaces from beach vendors.

Sasha

What three things will you always have in your bag when you travel?

An unlined notebook, my camera and some form of a sentimental tchotchke.

Sasha

What is your favourite travel read?

A menu.

Sasha

What are your travel beauty bag essentials?

As an avid eyebrow brusher, I always have an eyebrow brush on me. I also carry the most delicious coconut cream that I got on the beach, Hule Studio dewy skin serum and a scent that grounds me and brings me back to myself which right now is Bodha’s vibration perfume in Earth.

Sasha

Lastly, what part does travel play in your creative process?

It’s integral. Colour stories appearing in heaps of fishing twine, natural materials that could lend themselves to be transformed into household objects, one of a kind fonts on hand painted signs – all excite and inspire me in immense ways. I obsess over details, honing in on the things one might naturally look past. In the moments I spend curiously observing, everything else just sort of washes away.

Surrounded by lush greenery, soft Italian leather upholstery, retro bronze fittings and blue Mexican majolica pottery, Sydney’s newest resident, Bar Patrón by Rockpool– a union between Rockpool Dining Group, and its Culinary Director Neil Perry, and Patrón Tequila – combines authentic, fresh Mexican flavours, the finest Australian produce, and, of course, tequila. Grant Cheyne’s interiors capture the relaxed vibrancy of Mexican ‘estilo de vida’ and culture, amidst magnificent views of Sydney Harbour and Circular Quay, while dishes such as made-to-order tortillas, tamales and ceviches hit the spot from midday till late.

If this is the case, for photographer Adrian Meško, 2018 will be a year of overseas adventures, new friends and old, midnight swims and moments to remember.

1/16   “Three days in Emmanuel Picault’s home in Mexico over New Year’s.”

It is said that the way you spend New Year’s Eve is a sign of things to come. If this is the case, for New York-based photographer and RUSSH regular contributor Adrian Meško, 2018 will be a year of overseas adventures, warm hospitality, new friends and old, midnight swims, plates of the freshest, locally-sourced food, and conversations to remember for decades to come.

Here, Meško shares with RUSSH a series of photographs capturing his New Year’s spent in Santa Catarina, Mexico at the home of architect Emmanuel Picault along with “an eclectic mix of artists, architects, engineers …”. A number of Mesko’s photographs documenting this time have made their way into the photographer’s latest Temps Des Reves collection – a project that sees a selection of Meško’s favourite images printed onto hand rolled silk scarves.

A surfing town on Mexico’s Pacific coast, with beaches fringed by jungle and forever laidback vibes, Sayulita is the stuff of our postcard-perfect tropical getaway dreams. Here, RUSSH Fashion Editor Bridie Gilbert shares the best of her trip to the coastal town, from boutique hotels to swim spots, and where to find the perfect one-of-a-kind cover-up.

Stay …Hotelito La Esperanza. Owner and resident of Sayulita (via Byron Bay originally) Lucy Elliot runs this new and cute boutique hotel in the centre of town. It’s connected to her organic restaurant La Esperanza which is a must. Particularly great for vegetarians. They also make the best mescal margaritas in town. It gets better – Lucy is a remedial massage therapist and acupuncturist, and offers treatments from the hotel, another must.

For something with an ocean view, Casa Love is a Sayulita institution. A beautifully designed and decorated beach guesthouse run by french expat Talaly and her incredibly good looking family of surfers.

Taste …Yeikame for the best blue tortillas and guacamole in town.

For something really special take a drive to neighbouring town Punta Mita and dine at Si Señor for the best service, view and freshest Mexican fare you will come across in Nayarit.

Shop …Pachamama for one-off dresses, Debbie de la Cueva for tiny early century beaded necklaces, Evoke for homewares and Artefakt for original pieces made by locals.

Beach …At Playa Carricitos or Litibu.

Wear …Hand-dyed cotton gauze dresses from Pachamama over Tigerlily or Yasmine Eslami bikinis with traditional leather Huaraches. Ray-Ban round gold metal framed sunglasses. Organic by John Patrick slip dresses. The only beauty products you’ll need are RMS “Un” Cover-Up, Hydroskin Mask, La Roche-Posay sun care, Olaplex hair treatment and Christophe Robin Cleansing Purifying scrub with sea salt.
