TikTok has long since transcended its origins as an app fuelled almost entirely by dance trends and teenagers lip-syncing to a two-sentence excerpt of a Nicki Minaj song. It’s become a place of creativity, humour and, most excitingly for some of us, cooking videos.

Affectionately termed ‘FoodTok’, you’ve probably seen or heard about bygone viral recipes like Emily Mariko’s easy salmon rice and a certain baked feta pasta monstrosity. For better or for worse, it’s governing our meals and our palates one pasta chip at a time.

We’ll be the first to admit that declaring a love of food is the equivalent to saying you love breathing: Duh. As far as we see it, the real divider, at least on TikTok, is that there are those of us who like to prepare food and then there are those of us who prefer to watch it being prepared. Personally, I’m in the latter camp.

So next time you’re raking your brain for an easy lunch recipe or for a side dish to serve at your next dinner party, take this list and go for a scroll. These are the TikTok food accounts we turn to at mealtime or whenever we’re on our bedtime procrastination bit. Enjoy!

1. William Conrad

@williamconrad_♬ original sound – William

The long-running joke about William Conrad’s cooking on TikTok is that his soft-spoken demeanour skews toward sociopathic – and that he speaks to his camera much like a captive victim in his home. It’s become such a running joke that even he, himself plays into it – and it only makes us love him more . He is a phenomenal chef with the plating skills of a seasoned professional, and we’re honestly considering whether being his captive would be such a bad thing?

2. Christian Petracca

@christianpetracca_5MEXICAN FEAST Full menu at Ontrac5.com♬ Mas Que Nada – Sergio Mendes

If you want delicious food that you can actually cook at home yourself, look no further. While AFL players might not have a reputation in the kitchen, Christian Petracca is working hard to change that narrative, with a mix of easy, delicious homemade food that doesn’t feel intimidating to make yourself.

3. Tess Madalyn

@tessmadalynpeach week continues with sorbet♬ original sound – tess madalyn gigone

Tess is Toronto-based, and her account is the place to be if its simple, therapeutic cooking videos you’re after. None of her recipes feel performative – more like she’s sharing her actual daily meal prep with us – and I’d liken her videos to being on a comforting FaceTime call with a friend. Most recently, she’s been working her way through a bushel of peaches, with everything from peach jam, to tarte peach sorbet on the menu.

4. Thomas Straker

@thomas_straker Wild garlic butter – All things butter #FYP #ForYourPage #FoodTok #Butter #ButterTok #TikTokKitchen ♬ original sound – Thomas Straker

Like butter? You’ll love Thomas Straker. The British chef set out to convince the world of the goodness of the glossy, salty dairy product with his TikTok series, All Things Butter — and you best believe he’s done exactly that. While many of us haven’t actually gone out of our way to recreate one of his butter mashups, this is one of those rare moments when the joy is truly in watching the process.

5. 2PeopleCooking (Chuck and Hailee)

@2peoplecookingbaked ziti♬ original sound – Chuck and Hailee

Chuck and Hailee’s videos are both cosy and delicious — the kind that make you feel like you’re right there in the kitchen with them. The couple’s ‘Friday night dinner’ series sees them experiment with recipes from across the world, and serve up endless cooking inspiration in the process.

6. Pierce Abernathy

@pierzzaPeach + Goat Cheese Galette with a Honey-Thyme Syrup♬ Walkin’ Back to Georgia – Jim Croce

Pierce Abernathy is both a chef and a model, and specialises in transforming delicious, simple ingredients into mouth-watering and creative meals. On his page, you’ll find everything from peach and goat cheese galette, to savoury chive french toast. If you can think of it, Abernathy has likely made it.

7. Gal Shua-Haim

@somethingnutritious weekend sandwich > •toasted ciabatta •basil whipped feta •avocado •arugula with olive oil & hot honey •roasted peppers with balsamic •burrata •flakey salt & pepper #burratasandwich ♬ A Summer Place – Hollywood Strings Orchestra

Gal is a registered dietitian and recipe developer from Florida who whips up some absolutely delicious dishes online, all with nutrition still part of the equation. From gluten-free recipes to easy lunch ideas, her food is easily prepared and incorporated into your existing diet for a well-rounded weeknight dinner or weekend treat.

8. Nara Smith

Some consider her a controversial figure, but if you’re like us, watching Smith’s detailed food content brings the ultimate comfort. Nara Smith loves nothing more than challenging herself to make everything from ice cream to cereal from scratch.

9. Owen Han

@owen.han Butter chicken 🌯 #butterchicken #burrito ♬ original sound – OWEN HAN

Owen Han’s TikTok is a reminder of simpler times on the internet, when our favourite cooking channel was How To Basic on YouTube. I say this because the short clips of him slicing, cleaving and pressing down on his crusty sandwiches arrive with violent soundbites. It’s aggressive ASMR and I’m here for it.

10. Lucky Dragon Supper Club

@luckydragonsupperclub Stirfry Bok Choy Rice (Cai Fan) 🥬 #homecooking #asianfood 4u2nv full recipe is on @Colournary Magazine ♬ Lamp – Lukrembo

Some local girlies cooking up Asian food across a variety of cuisines for your viewing pleasure. Plus, if you get to the point where your cravings take over, Lucky Dragon Supper Club is opening in real life soon. Bai.

11. Emily Mariko

@emilymariko♬ original sound – Emily Mariko

A 3o-year-old California girl that needs no introduction. She was the reason half the digitally active world were mashing up day-old salmon into a orange sludge with rice, kewpie and sriracha. Wherever you stand on the trend, or on eating farmed salmon for that matter, there’s something satisfying about watching Mariko prepare proper portions of food from her tidy kitchen. We live for her farmer’s market hauls (and her tips for storing veggies).

12. Cucina Con Ruben

Look, I don’t speak Italian (at least that’s what the northerners say) but from what I can gather, Chef Ruben asks those walking beneath his balcony what he should cook and whips it up. It’s a simple premise but hey, it’s entertaining. That and the recipes are easy enough to conjure up at home.

13. Matty Matheson

@mattymathesonCOUPLA FOOD GROUPS♬ original sound – MATTY MATHESON

Admittedly, Matty doesn’t do much cooking these days, at least on TikTok. But we’re still following him in the hope that he might just turn out some heart-stopping burgers someday soon. In the meantime, follow the Canadian chef for clips of him twerking with Addison Rae of all people. And away from TikTok, you’ll also catch him on the bear. Very fitting.

14. Nana Joe

@nanajoe19♬ original sound – Alejandra❤

When you’re chowing down on a measly salad Nana Joe will always deliver a punch of food envy. There’s cheese, and lots of it, there’s spice and she’s almost always dishing up Mexican fare. Lord take me and transform me into Nana Joe’s husband, he’s got it good.

15. Hwoo Lee

@hwoo.lee #ad Nothing like killing time while my groceries get delivered via @instacart ♬ original sound – h woo

We’ve all got a crush on Hwoo Lee. Yes, he’s an actual trained cook but he also has a four step beauty routine and editing skills to envy. Then there’s the fact that we love a aloof boy. Lee covers lots of ground, specialising in Korean fare and even trying his hand at some cocktails in the meantime.

16. Mor Ibayan

@moribyan Steak sandwich time! #asmr style video IB: @Hank ♬ Sunday Kind of Love – Etta James

Hajar Labah would win the most immaculate kitchen award if such a thing existed. Like her creatively arranged shots, her benches and equipment are spotless which soothes the pedantic side of me. Plus, her recipes are loaded with ingredients and are always well seasoned. What’s not to like?

17. Marin

@marinarasauce30 peach upside down cake 🙂 #dessert #peach #peachcake #cake #baking #summer #foodtok #fyp ♬ Thee Lakesiders – 💫✨M1zzLyons520✨💫

A smaller creator, but one who’s no less deserving of a spot on this list. Marin will have your mouth watering with her simple but oh-so aesthetically pleasing videos, from breakfast tacos to upside-down peach cake. No notes.

18. Sophia Roe

@sophia_roe if you’re not eating your pasta green, what are you even doing? #pasta #fyp #cozy #nyc ♬ Dignita – Stelvio Cipriani

You know how we feel about Sophia Roe, let alone her cooking videos. All those angles, the swathes of natural light, somehow she manages to make each tutorial into a cinematic masterpiece. Fusing art with matters of the stomach is soul food indeed.

21. Justine Snacks

Justin Doiron has a habit of making all her recipes look effortless and simple. Spanning a variety of genres, from this viral Brussels sprout salad to chocolate chip cookies to tteokbokki and more, you’ll never be lost for a dinner idea again.

22. Julius Roberts

@julius.roberts Leek, potato and chorizo stew. One of those comforting recipes my family just lives on. We make this all the time. All you need is a good hunk of bread spread generously with butter. So easy to cook, everything goes in one pot and has just three main ingredients. Absolutey delicious no matter the weather. Enjoy! #greenhouse #cooking #recipe #fy #food #homemade ♬ original sound – Julius Roberts

Is there anything you could want more than to watch Julis Roberts cook you farm-to-table fare from the outdoor greenhouse of his smallholding in the English countryside? I think not. Roberts intuitively throws together zesty courgette pastas, creamy hummus and hearty pumpkin soups – all showcasing his just-picked farm-grown produce. If his TikTok’s aren’t enough, you can satiate yourself with his six-part television series A Taste of the Country where you can watch him forage for beans and make homemade wood-fired pizzas.

23. Justine’s table

@justines.tableCrispy skin sea bass over a leek & spinach risotto topped with sungold confit, micro greens & lemon zest♬ Si Tu Vois Ma Mère – Sidney Bechet

If Justine’s gorgeous kitchen isn’t enough, her elevated take on home-style cooking will certainly get you going. From decadent seasonal roast vegetable trays to hand-rolled tagliatelle and Italian Wedding Soup, Justine will keep your week-night dinners from being anything but boring.

22. Alissasmagic

@alissasmagic can’t stop with these sandwiches #sandwich #sandwiches #sandwichrecipe #easyrecipe #lunchideas #lunch #sandwichmaker ♬ Swan Lake “dance of four swans” – Kohrogi

There is something addictive about these videos. We’re particularly obsessed with her sandwhich recipes, which almost always feature thickly-sliced sourdough and the kinds of filling you dream about. But Alissa also dabbles in healthy breakfasts, lunch, and dinner recipes. Something for every mood.

24. Ottolenghi

@ottolenghi Probably my favourite thing to do with chickpeas.. #cookwithottolenghi #recipe #foodtok #hummus ♬ original sound – Ottolenghi

To absolutely no one’s surprise, everyone’s favourite chef and cookbook author Yotam Ottolenghi’s TikTok account is like taking a culinary masterclass with the famed chef himself. He’ll walk you through some of his most mouth-watering dishes, and give you tips and techniques for cooking more intuitively at home.

25. Gabbriette

Before she was our favourite reference, Gabbriette was making waves as a foodie force to be reckoned with. In addition to being basically the coolest girl in the world, the model-turned-social-media-chef is also a phenomenal cook. Need proof? Try out some of her grain-free recipes (I’m a personal fan of her Lemon and Poppyseed Loaf, which I’m made several times over now) and thank me later.

26. Stanley Tucci

@stanley.tucci Bekated Happy Father’s Day. Wait for thw punchline. #tuccitok ♬ original sound – Stanley Tucci

While he doesn’t get into the nitty-gritty of recipe-making, nor does he post anywhere near regularly, we will always have a spot spot for Stanely Tucci’s kitchen. Not only is it gorgeously appointed and helmed by one of our favourite personalities, it’s also the birthplace of some of his favourite Italian and English dishes – and we’d never say no to pulling up a seat at his kitchen bar (even through our phone screens).

27. Wish Bone Kitchen (Meredith)

@wishbonekitchenClient’s birthday weekend = non-stop cooking 🫡 kinda popped off with dinner tho ngl♬ original sound – wishbonekitchen

What started as Meredith’s vlogs as a private chef in the Hamptons over summer soon burgeoned into a full-time cooking business and soon-to-be cook book. She’s often flitting to Dior shows or travelling to cheffing for high-profile celebs, but Meredith isn’t without a completely disarming charm and expertise that makes her desperately likeable and addictive to watch. She’s also spawned an entire genre of creators who now document their lives as private chefs.

Yes, cortisol face is real – but you probably don’t have it https://www.russh.com/cortisol-face-signs/ Sat, 15 Feb 2025 23:00:43 +0000 https://www.russh.com/?p=225009 There are other reasons for the swelling.

The post Yes, cortisol face is real – but you probably don’t have it appeared first on RUSSH.

]]>
If you’ve spent any time at all on TikTok in the last year than you’d undoubtedly be familiar with the term ‘cortisol face’. It is one of the swarths of toxic body terminology to emerge on the platform.

But cortisol face is slightly different from some of the other terms to have emerged in recent times. Unlike the completely fabricated hellscapes that are ‘septum arms’ and ‘legging legs’, cortisol face is actually a real thing. That said, it’s actually quite unlikely that you have it.

What is cortisol face? And why does it happen?

Cortisol face is characterised by having a rounded, puffy face – some people refer to this as having a ‘moon face’. People with cortisol face will find that they are holding fluid and fat in parts of the face like the jowl or under the jaw. This rounds out their features and contributes to a curved face shape rather than one that is more angular.

As you can probably guess from the title, this situation is caused by the hormone cortisol. A stress hormone secreted by the adrenal glands, cortisol has a number of different impacts beyond just rounding out your face.

What is cortisol? What does it do to the body?

In the event you’re being chased by a tiger or bear, cortisol increases glucose in the bloodstream to help you find the energy to outrun a predator. It also slows non-essential functions that could hinder your ability to flee, such as digestion. It can even suppress memory formation to limit mental trauma from stressful situations.

All of that is actually very helpful if we still had to run away from tigers and bears. However, for those who are regularly stressed and producing cortisol outside of essential fight-or-flight situations, cortisol can do some strange things to the body.

It can lead to sleep problems, memory issues, muscle pain, headaches, digestive issues and weight gain. And for those who experience chronically elevated cortisol, they can also experience thinning skin, acne, bruising, muscle pain, poor healing, severe fatigue and excess weight in the upper back, neck, stomach and jaw. And this is where the moon face or cortisol face comes in.

So, do you have cortisol face?

Probably not.

If you’ve had a stressful few weeks, elevated cortisol can likely make you a bit puffy and rather tired once the weekend hits. But the rounded moon face? Most people need to experience chronic elevated cortisol levels for weeks or months before seeing the rounded facial features develop.

Realistically, your face is not going to change and hold weight through the jaw because of one or two stressful weeks. So, if you’ve been feeling particularly puffy after hectic work project, cortisol face is probably not the culprit.

Dr Vijay Murthy, in this article on Healthline, said that facial changes due to cortisol are “usually seen in more severe endocrine disorders rather than in the everyday stress most people experience,” he said.

“Everyday stress does not elevate cortisol to the levels needed to produce such a dramatic physical change.”

Does that mean that the puffiness is all in your head? Of course not. There are loads of other reasons why your face might be swollen and holding fluid.

In this article on ABC News, a doctor explains: “the puffiness of our face can also be due to a variety of different things, for example, diet, medications, thyroid function, how our kidneys are doing, and also how much sleep we’re getting,” says Dr. Darien Sutton.

Everything from a big weekend with little sleep, to salty meal can lead to facial puffiness. And yes, there is some evidence to show that stress causes excess water retention. Fortunately, in these instances, it’s usually temporary. A good sweat session in the gym or sauna and an early night can often help to fix temporary puffiness.

What to do if you think you have high cortisol?

Short answer. Go to a doctor. If your cortisol levels are something that you’re concerned about, head to your GP and asks for a blood test.

Some people genuinely do have the moon face or cortisol face that comes with imbalanced hormones. Some people who are at risk of the impacts of persistently high cortisol levels include those with cushings disease, PCOS, insulin resistance, chronic mental health conditions and autism spectrum disorder to name a few.

As someone with PCOS, I’ve dealt with impacts of persistently high cortisol. It is a nasty situation. Certainly having a round face was the absolute least of my worries in the face of memory loss and inability to heal small wounds. The long-term impacts of high cortisol can be very damaging. If you are at all concerned, I cannot recommend enough the importance of getting yourself checked out by a professional. I get my levels looked at about twice a year to ensure my treatment plan is working.

The frazzled 2000s English woman aesthetic is upon us again https://www.russh.com/2000s-frazzled-english-woman-aesthetic/ Thu, 13 Feb 2025 02:05:03 +0000 https://www.russh.com/?p=169538 AKA Richard Curtis core.

The post The frazzled 2000s English woman aesthetic is upon us again appeared first on RUSSH.

]]>
It’s not like RUSSH to play into the barrage of core trends. Between Barbiecore, goblincore, balletcore et al. we’re all exhausted. But, at the risk of eating my own words, I do want to divert your attention to one of our favourite aesthetics to brew on the runways and TikTok alike.

Well, let’s be clear, it’s not exactly new. You see, the return of noughties fashion has revived micro mini skirts, ballet flats, the Balenciaga motorcycle bag and more. And now, the pendulum is swinging to welcome a style most commonly found in Richard Curtis films. Or, what we’ve dubbed the ‘frazzled 2000s English woman’ aesthetic.

@russhmagazine Is this a thing? The era of the sensible yet frazzled 2000s English woman is upon us! #y2kaesthetic #y2kenglishwoman #frazzledenglishwoman #y2kstyle ♬ cant get you out of my head. – 🦆

Plucked from the period between 2000 and 2007, the ‘frazzled 2000s English woman’ is a mindset not a list of prerequisites. Although, it was definitely an archetype in early noughties film, from Bridget Jones and her pals Shazza and Jude to Emma Thompsoneven Keira Knightley or Laura Linney in Love Actually to Kate Winslet in The Holiday. What do these women have in common? A lot, if we’re honest.

First, majority of them work in publishing, are middle class and all of them are in the romantic doldrums. More than that though, it’s their style that links them, a blend of what would typically be considered corporate attire and cold weather furnishings.

They likely wear jewel tone opaque tights – matte finish only. Skirts are essential, and most of the time they hit the knees, unless of course the skirt is off sick. In which case you should make a complaint to HR about your boss. Knitwear plays an important part too, be it a skinny scarf or off-the-shoulder sweaters in wool so loosely stitched, you’ve got goosebumps from direct contact with the air. Add on a pair of knee-high boots, bonus points if they’re Prada Sport, and there you have it. A recipe for the frazzled 2000s English woman.

To accessorise, simply stuff a couple of tissues up your sleeve or layer strings of glass pendants around your neck. As for what to do with your hair? It’s simple really. Let it get as limp as possible, then sweep it into a claw clip. Alternatively, you can cut it into a pragmatic bixie hairstyle.

So besides these film references, where else have we seen glimmers of the frazzled 2000s English woman aesthetic? For Fall 2022, Maryam Nassir Zadeh came through with a layered collection of clean cuts, ribbed lightweight knits and eclectic styling that speaks to the heart of the new trend. Meanwhile, Spanish brand Paloma Wool is doling out constant inspiration with boat neck alpaca wool sweaters and shrunken work shirts nipped in at the waist. Local Australian brand all is a gentle spring is offering up its own twist on the look with silk merino headbands and grey office-inappropriate mini skirts.

The craziest thing about Vita Kari? They’re turning virality into art https://www.russh.com/vita-kari/ Sun, 02 Feb 2025 01:00:55 +0000 https://www.russh.com/?p=241545 Some artists follow a singular path; Vita Kari carves their own.

The post The craziest thing about Vita Kari? They’re turning virality into art appeared first on RUSSH.

]]>
Some artists follow a singular path; Vita Kari carves their own. Their practice is quite the force in motion, an ever-evolving tapestry that seamlessly fuses performance, textiles, sculpture, and video with an instinctive, almost kinetic grace. They don’t just work across mediums, but rather they bend them, shaping concepts with a rare agility that feels both deeply personal and acutely of the moment. Vita’s work is an interplay between the digital and the tactile, where the immediacy of online culture converges with a reverence for craft, turning everything from their grandmother’s rugs to the ephemera of social media into high art.

Chances are, you’ve come across one of Vita’s viral TikToks, the ones that begin with their signature hook, “The craziest thing about…” before pulling us into a world of visual trickery. But beyond the illusions, Vita’s work is rooted in radical accessibility. Whether crafting conceptual videos that thrive within the algorithm or challenging traditional gallery spaces to be more inclusive, particularly for those with hearing loss—they’re redefining how art is created, experienced, and understood.

And their vision stretches far beyond the gallery walls. Collaborating with brands like Loewe, Tory Burch, and Marc Jacobs, Vita merges augmented reality, interactive art, and social media-centric storytelling to forge deeper, more dynamic connections with audiences. Next on their radar? Diesel.

For Vita, art is a living conversation, one that unfolds across disciplines, communities, and digital landscapes, constantly evolving in response to the world around them. Below, we speak with Vita Kari on their art, how they intersect art with technology, and what’s next for them.

1.Your practice exists across such a unique blend of mediums – visual and physical performance art, textile, sculptural work. How did you end up working across such diverse mediums?

When I think of a project, the first thing I think about is the concept. A lot of my projects require multiple moving pieces, or bring many ideas into focus. For me, the concept comes first, and the material application comes second. As artists, our job is to approach the world in real time and communicate it in visual context!

When I work across mediums, I’m just choosing the language that best aligns with what I’m trying to communicate. For example, textile makes sense to discuss the screen combined with personal heritage. I lean on performance, video or virality in other conversations.

2. You’ve described your practice as aiming to make fine art more accessible. How do you make that happen in your work?

Much of my video work is platform specific to social media sites! I create conceptual video works, allowing users to directly engage and comment on the absurdity of the digital experience, regardless if they have access to a gallery or not. The digital space is so unique dueto its ability to bring fine art to any user’s screen.

I’m also interested in accessibility in the gallery space, particularly for those with hearing loss (as it’s personal to me). Accessibility can always be fine-tuned in public spaces, but hearing accessibility is something I think a lot about galleries due to so many video works. I miss out on the full experience of my limited hearing capabilities/deafness.

3. Where do you see the intersection of art and technology heading in the next five years?

I hope to see AI being used ethically and having a small environmental footprint, leading into being seen as more of a tool (similar to the “fill” tool in Photoshop). I wouldn’t be surprised if the next big technology jump is 2-D to 3-D photos and videos. Immersive viewing experiences are becoming the norm, and that affects how we engage with art, both in and out of the gallery space. I also see an upward trend of tapestries and other old world, slow technologies being seen regularly in fine art spaces. The rise of new technologies so quickly makes us nostalgic for processes our grandparents were familiar with.

4. You’ve worked with some incredible brands and artists already, but is there one brand or person you’d love to collaborate with in the future?

I would love to do creative direction on a project or an immersive installation experience for a fashion brand like Diesel or Marc Jacobs.Or to have a shoe collaboration with UGG! I would love to work with a jewellery brand like Alexis Bittar to make hearing aidaccessories/inspired jewellery.

@loewe The craziest thing about being creative … @Vita Kari #LOEWE ♬ original sound – LOEWE

5. A lot of your work is deeply personal – from your textile series reimagining your Grandmother’s rugs to pieces navigating your experience with hearing loss. How do you decide which personal narratives to translate into your art?

As life unfolds and evolves, my work does too. My work tends to parallel my lived experiences and respond to the world around me.

6. Who / what are some of your biggest artistic influences? Do you have any creative north stars, or references you find yourself returning to time and again?

Andrea Fraser, Cathie Opie, Thania Peterson, Mickalene Thomas, Isabelle Albuquerque— and so many other amazing artists inspire me every day!! Qualesha Wood and I almost did a show together, which was so special because I love her work. I hope it happens one day soon! One of my favourite painters of all time, Joaquin Stacey-Calle, and I are doing a duo show soon so that’s an incredibly exciting thing. I’m looking forward to it!

7. Looking ahead, how do you envision your work evolving over the next decade?

In the next decade, I see myself exploring the boundaries of unraveling. I’m interested in pieces that form a life of its own after its creation— which is why my work around virality captures me. They are works made for an accidental audience that become surprisingly collaborative—they lose the original plot, becoming replicated and up-cycled.

My series on “Virality as Form” is ongoing and doesn’t just stop at my craziest thing videos. My heart has always been in community, whether that’s online, off-line, here in LA where I’m from, through public artworks. I envision myself adding to the zeitgeist, but pushing my work (especially performances) beyond even my own expectations.

Once, a like meant approval — quick, simple, and gone in a blink. But now? The absence of a like cuts deeper than its presence ever could. No unfollow. No cancellation. Just silence — sharp, deliberate, and cold as a side-eye from across the room.

This is the new currency of cool. Likes aren’t handed out anymore — they’re power moves. And Gen Z is playing the game with precision. One that has involved going radio silent on celebrities. There are a lot of mixed feelings on this particular trend – it’s not hard to see why. Whether or not you endorse it, here’s an explanation for anyone who’s been scrolling the comments and feeling confused.

What’s happening and why is there a sudden celebrity engagement boycott?

Welcome to TikTok’s newest power play, where likes are no longer casual signs of approval — they’re deliberate acts of control. Forget unfollows or cancellation calls; the internet’s sharpest tool is now silence. Gen Z’s grip on social capital is firm, and they’re wielding it with precision. If your content isn’t hitting, you’ll feel it. No comments. No likes. Just the stark void of indifference. And unlike a pointed critique, it’s impossible to argue with silence.

@ykme.000 uhm the really did that WHAHAHAH W#heyy #fyppp #fyppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp #jojosiwa #nah ♬ jshxwty – vontelaststand

How did it start?

It all began one day from a TikTok video. User Anita casually suggested, “Bruh imagine if we all just started ignoring celebrities. Like how hilarious would it be if they posted and got like 13 likes.” The suggestion, lighthearted but laced with potential, struck a chord. One video became a movement. The next logical step? Choosing a target. A follow-up comment suggested none other than JoJo Siwa, and with that, the plan was set into motion. What began as a joke quickly morphed into a digital rebellion. Unlike traditional call-out culture, this wasn’t about pointing fingers — it was about looking away entirely.

Scroll through JoJo Siwa’s TikTok page, and you’ll notice the shift. Her videos, once flooded with hearts and comments, are now quiet. Her likes have dwindled. The ‘plan’ didn’t stop with JoJo. Other celebrities and influencers’ TikTok pages are starting to feel the chill as well. One of Kim Kardashian’s most recent and most viewed TikTok’s, a Skims collaboration, also seems to have a like count that is low compared the staggering 12 million views.

How do you know you’ve stumbled across a video people are refusing to like? Check the comments under a celeb’s post and you might just see it: “Stick to the plan.” It’s a reminder for those in-the-know, and its presence is as unsettling as it is effective.

What does “Stick to the plan” mean?

“Stick to the plan” has become the cryptic mantra of this TikTok movement. It’s a call to stay united, to withhold today’s currency: a like. It’s not a cancellation, it’s not a critique — it’s something more sinister. The phrase is dropped like a breadcrumb in the comment sections of celebrity TikToks, a reminder to stay the course. If you’re wondering what the ‘plan’ is, well, congratulations — you’re already part of it. The brilliance of the ‘plan’ lies in its simplicity: do nothing, say nothing, like nothing.

It’s an evolution of internet culture, where doing less somehow yields more. It’s subtle. It’s sly. It’s the ultimate flex.

Bronzed beauty gets a new name – why TikTok’s Latte Makeup is a trend worth trying https://www.russh.com/latte-makeup-tiktok/ Mon, 09 Dec 2024 04:45:26 +0000 https://www.russh.com/?p=189466 A look that says "Capri in July" without ever booking a flight.

The post Bronzed beauty gets a new name – why TikTok’s Latte Makeup is a trend worth trying appeared first on RUSSH.

I don’t know about you, but I have a total of two makeup looks up my sleeve, and one of them is a summery bronze. So it’s nice to see the look go viral on TikTok, albeit under a new gourmand name. Introducing, latte makeup, the latest fixation for stalwarts of #BeautyTok.

In the latest addition to the food-ification of beauty trends—glazed donut nails, chocolate brownie lips, cherry cola hair, to name a few—latte makes use of coffee-coloured hues for a deliciously warm, bronzy look.

Coined by content creator Rachel Rigler, latte makeup began doing the rounds after Rigler recreated a look by makeup artist Tanielle Jai. Focusing on layering golden and brown shades that have honey and olive undertones, Rigler begins with a matte base using It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC Cream brushed evenly everywhere save for the nose. The content creator then goes in with a series of bronzers, toasty eyeshadows and crayons, a single coat of mascara, lip liner and gloss. Rigler avoids blush, but I imagine a peachy hue would help lift the final effort. The result is a glowy, lit-from-within look that’s easily recreated with the products many of us already own.

@rachelrigler LATTE MAKEUP ✨☕ cheers 🙂 #makeup #makeuptrends #beauty #lattemakeup #summermakeup #makeuphacks #greenscreen ♬ original sound – Rachel Rigler

Is latte makeup a revelation? That depends on who you ask. For those who were cruising beauty blogs and following makeup artists like Australia’s Ania Milczarczyk a decade ago, it’s very much reminiscent of the “bronzed goddess” look of the mid 2010s. If anything, the resurgence of latte makeup on TikTok is a testament to how timeless a beauty recipe it is, especially as dewy skin fades out and matte makeup makes its return.

Ultimately, the drawcard of latte makeup is its accessibility. For starters, unlike inane trends like so-called “vanilla girl aesthetic”, latte makeup can be achieved on all skin types and tones. All one needs to do is dial up the deepness of each shade for darker skin tones. Another pull of latte makeup lies in how diffused the overall look is. There are no harsh lines which means it’s forgiving in its application, and an easy look for everyone to master, no matter their beauty skillset. Plus, it’s a no-brainer for summer, when we tend to take a less-is-more approach to beauty.

So if you’re looking to jump on the latte makeup train and build a look that says “Capri in July” without ever booking a flight, here are the products we’d recommend.

Gentle allure: how the internet is adopting the ‘demure’ beauty trend https://www.russh.com/demure-beauty-trend/ Fri, 16 Aug 2024 01:49:58 +0000 https://www.russh.com/?p=224280 Very mindful.

The latest TikTok sound bite to go viral this month is from TikTok user Jools Lebron (@joolieannie), whose “You see how I do my makeup for work? Very demure, very mindful,” clip has transcended trend to be heralded as a mindset – perhaps the antithesis of the internet’s obsession with the loud and proud ‘brat summer‘.

Jools’ humorous approach to understated beauty is what has made ‘demure’ the word of the moment. It’s inescapable – from Vulture and Rolling Stone breaking down the meme, to the comments section of just about every trending video at the moment featuring approximately 1,000 ‘very demure, very mindful’ responses.

The trend

The demure beauty trend on TikTok is all about embracing a soft, understated elegance that exudes quiet confidence. It’s a refreshing shift from bold, statement-making looks, focusing instead on natural, minimalistic makeup and soft, neutral tones

Makeup artists and enthusiasts on the platform are championing this aesthetic by highlighting dewy skin, delicate blush, and barely-there lip tints. ‘Demure beauty’ is about enhancing one’s natural features, rather than transforming them, celebrating a timeless femininity that feels effortlessly chic. It’s a nod to simplicity in a world often dominated by excess, resonating with those who find beauty in subtlety and grace.

L is the word: why ‘limerence’ is on everyone’s lips https://www.russh.com/what-is-limerence/ Fri, 12 Apr 2024 06:05:58 +0000 https://www.russh.com/?p=211470 Not to be confused with love.

The post L is the word: why ‘limerence’ is on everyone’s lips appeared first on RUSSH.

]]>
“Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul. Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Lo. Lee. Ta.” Or so Humbert Humbert goes, prattling on about an unresolved and inarticulably malign desire in the opening header of Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita. What on earth could he be feeling? The answer lies in another tri-syllabic word starting with L.

Limerence — Furore that leaves you so lightheaded, you almost confuse it with love. Let’s break the word down.

What does it mean?

A state of utter infatuation or obsession that involves an unquenchable passion bordering on intrusive. A cataclysmic amount of fantasising. Being drawn to your chosen object of desire like a moth to a flame. And most importantly, no threat of real intimacy. On TikTok, there are 9081 videos all tagged limerence, which run the gamut of advice for anxious attachment girlies to tongue-in-cheek tutorials on the long-lost art of seduction.

What are the three stages?

Infatuation – This is the honeymoon borderline addictive phase. Blood pressure is ratcheting. Our mind snags on the reminder of them without fail, and more importantly on its own accord. There’s no other way to put it that Marina and the Diamonds hasn’t done so better: ‘We’ve got obsessions…I want to erase every nasty thought that bugs me every day, of every week,’

Crystallization – The second the yearning has cemented, things start to crystallise rather quickly: this person might just be the end-all, for all. We start deifying whoever it is that’s taking precedence in our narrative at the time. They reserve far too much credit for existing in the backends of our mind, and we are doing nothing to stop it.

Deterioration – All delusions must come to an end. A decrescendoeing of the mental psyche will return the light back to your eyes. You realise, beatifically, that this in no way a reflection of who you are or what you stand for. Huzzah! To dust we will return.

What are other examples?

Carrie and Big are the picture-perfect reference. That last situationship you had with a Libra guy. SZA‘s subjects she’s enshrined in song especially in the Snooze MV all qualify as stages of limerence.

Who is Sabrina Bahsoon, the London model at the centre of TikTok’s Tube Girl trend? https://www.russh.com/who-is-sabrina-bahsoon-tube-girl/ Tue, 26 Sep 2023 02:06:14 +0000 https://www.russh.com/?p=193736 First Lady of Juicy Couture, and TikTok's newest hyper-fixation.

The post Who is Sabrina Bahsoon, the London model at the centre of TikTok’s Tube Girl trend? appeared first on RUSSH.

]]>
For once TikTok has regurgitated a new micro-trend that we can stand behind – one that centres on saying a big f*** you to social anxiety and embraces an emboldened sense of self confidence. And at the centre of it all is a London-based model and newly minted viral TikTok star named Sabrina Bahsoon, aka TikTok’s ‘Tube Girl’.

For the chronically online, you’ve probably already happened across Bahsoon’s account, the 22-year-old posting videos of herself with a 0.5 zoom and wind blowing through her hair, dancing and posing on The London Underground while en route to a night out.

The original viral video garnered over 10 million views, and was captioned “Being the friend who lives on the other side of the city so you gotta hype yourself up during the commute.”

So, who is Tube Girl (aka Sabrina Bahsoon)?

Originally from Malaysia, Bahsoon is a 22-year-old university student at Durham University, where she studies law. She’s also a working model, signed to The Hive Management in London.

Bahsoon told the BBC that she had originally asked a stranger to film that first viral TikTok video for her, but that they had said no – a minor rejection that ended in some serious serendipity, wouldn’t you say?

What is the Tube Girl trend on TikTok?

Since her first viral video, Bahsoon has continued to make similar videos on her account for the last couple of weeks, some now garnering well over 15-20 million views each. She’s even had special guests appear in a couple of recent videos with her, like fellow viral TikTok star Bella Poarch and Grammy-nominated musician Omar Apollo.

She’s since sparked a ‘Tube Girl’ trend online, which has seen thousands of copycats globally take to their local trains, trams and other public spaces to replicate her filming style and irrepressible confidence. The hashtag #tubegirl has since drawn over 534 million views on the social media app in a matter of weeks.

Why is the Tube Girl trend so popular?

What seems to have garnered online fans for Bahsoon, is not necessarily her dancing or special guests, but rather her unbridled and infectious confidence; a fearlessness to be herself and to be a little silly in a public space.

“Doing this in public is wild but I’m tryna get on your level” one comment, with nearly 13K likes, on that first viral video had read.

In an interview with the BBC recently, Bahsoon said that “When I see people imitating it I’m like, ‘Finally, like, people are getting it’. They’re enjoying their their commute a little bit better. And I love to see people having fun, so it’s honestly such a heart-warming thing for me.”

Why was Tube Girl at fashion week?

Bahsoon was already a signed model before her newfound viral TikTok fame, but her recent online notoriety saw her quickly snatched up by a handful of brands during fashion month. She attended the BOSS runway show at Milan Fashion Week, and walked the runway at M.A.C’s first ever runway show at London Fashion Week.

She also attended events for cosmetics brands like NYX and Glossier, filming another iconic dancing video on an ice rink for the latter.

Tube Girl and M.A.C Cosmetics…

Not only did Bahsoon walk in M.A.C’s London Fashion Week show last week, she’s also become an official partner of the brand, fronting campaign imagery for their newest clear lipgloss. Tube girl meets tube gloss? It sounds like a marketing match made in heaven to us.

Bahsoon also has a keen fashion sense, which has garnered the attention of fans on her Instagram account. Her personal style is playful, colourful and has a distinctive Y2K edge. Here are some of our favourite Tube Girl style moments…

Get to know Gabbriette Bechtel, model, musician and TikTok cooking icon https://www.russh.com/gabbriette-bechtel-style-file/ Thu, 14 Sep 2023 07:30:34 +0000 https://www.russh.com/?p=192554 By day she's TikTok's favourite Goth-girl chef, and by night she's fronting campaigns for Betsey Johnson, Heaven by Marc Jacobs and Givenchy.

The post Get to know Gabbriette Bechtel, model, musician and TikTok cooking icon appeared first on RUSSH.

]]>
If you’re not as chronically online as the rest of us, you may be wondering who Gabbriette Bechtel is this week, after she was spotted by the side of The 1975’s lead singer Matty Healy at New York Fashion Week. But for those of us who live in the depths of niche cooking TikToks, or who’ve had their eye on the latest campaigns from brands like Kiko Kostadinov x Heaven by Marc Jacobs or Isamaya Beauty, you’ll know exactly who the Californian model, musician, style icon and content creator is.

At just 26 years old, she’s already lived many lives – as a musician, as a model, as a social media influencer and online chef – but she’s now just starting to turn heads with her Gothic good looks, and bad-girl-next-door charm.

Here’s everything you need to know about Gabbriette Bechtel, and a run-down on some of her best style moments.

On her upbringing…

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Gabbriette B (@gabbriette)

Bechtel was born in Orange County, California to a Mexican mother and German father on 28 July 1997 (she’s unsurprisingly a Leo). At just 26 years old, she’s become something of an IYKYK social media influencer with 562k Instagram followers, 323.1K TikTok followers.

On her band…

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by NASTY CHERRY (@nastycherryband)

Bechtel previously fronted an indie alt-rock quad called Nasty Cherry, alongside drummer Debbie Knox-Hewson, guitarist Chloe Chaidez, and bassist Georgia Somary. The band was formed and mentored by pop darling Charli XCX, who apparently recruited Bechtel for the band before she’d even heard her sing: “I was just kind of like, ‘Look, even if you can’t sing you’re a fucking rockstar… and you’re in.’”

The group quietly split in 2021.

On her beauty routine…

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Gabbriette B (@gabbriette)

Bechtel has a pretty recognisable look – her plucked, pencilled-on brows, and dark grunge-inspired makeup reflect the revival of indie sleaze in pop culture’s lexicon.

The model has said in previous interviews that she’s pretty pared back when it comes to her skincare routine, but loves brands like Osea, Youth to the People, Belif and Supergoop! She’s a bit of a sunscreen stickler, but considered smoking cigarettes her beauty vice.

She’s recently been featured in campaigns for Hailey Bieber’s Rhode Beauty, and Isamaya Ffrench’s Isamaya Beauty.

On her style…

Her 90s Goth-girl aesthetic has made her relatively well-known in fashion circles; the poster child for a kind of understated edgy aesthetic that feels worlds apart from the ‘clean girl’ uniform that seems to have become all-too ubiquitous these days. We decided to deep dive into the fashion archives of Gabbriette to bring you some of her best style moments from over the years.
