The post Maggie Hewitt on affordable skincare, Eucalyptus showers and the rituals that got her through pregnancy appeared first on RUSSH.

Maggie Hewitt is well known for her slow New Zealand fashion brand, Maggie Marilyn. But she’s also got a strong affinity for beauty and wellness rituals. Hailing from the Bay of Islands in the North Island, her upbringing was mostly outdoors; she values a slow pace, fresh air, simple pleasures — a mindset made all the more necessary since the birth of her first baby, Ralph.

Her beauty routine is varied but comprehensive: at-home LED light, fresh Eucalyptus showers, salt therapy, organic oils, fermented foods, fresh makeup but heavy-lifting skincare. Here, Hewitt shares her rituals and favourite products, from makeup artists tips on set, to the signature scent she inherited from her mum.

What’s your earliest beauty-related memory?

My mum has worn Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille perfume most of my life, and I remember stealing sprays as a teenager when she wasn’t looking. I started wearing it about a decade ago; it’s warm and sweet and reminds me of her hugs. I love the idea that as we grow and evolve, some things in our beauty routines and wardrobes stay the same.

What was the first product you ever owned?

It must have been Maybelline Great Lash Mascara, that neon pink and lime green tube?

How has your approach to beauty evolved over the years?

I’ve always taken a pretty holistic approach to beauty and tried to take care of myself from the inside so that makeup and skincare can just be icing on top. The needs of my skin have changed in different seasons of my life: As a teen I struggled with acne, and when I moved to Sydney in my late twenties my skin broke out from stress and different water. Makeup artist Isabella Schimid — who is the beauty bible and always gives the best advice — told me I should switch to The Ordinary to help soothe my skin and I’ve had it in my routine ever since.

I imagine becoming a mum has also altered this in some way?

Yes, transitioning into motherhood changed my skin needs all over again. I’ve always been pretty ingredient-conscious, but pregnancy and breastfeeding made me even more aware of what I was ingesting and applying. I swear by organic rosehip oil; I lathered my belly and boobs in it my whole pregnancy and managed to avoid stretch marks. I’m still using it now.

What does your current morning routine look like?

It’s a bit of a whirlwind. I do a quick full-body dry brush to stimulate the blood and wake myself up (it’s also a great exfoliator) then jump in the shower. I use a Squalane Cleanser morning and night followed by a few drops of Hyaluronic Acid. All of my makeup is from Westman Atelier; the quality is unmatched, the formulas are clean and everything is designed to apply quickly, usually with just clean hands. I use the Vital Skincare Complexion Drops as my foundation, followed by their Baby Cheeks Blush and Highlight Stick. You can do your whole face in under a minute, perfect for a mum with no time. The final step, usually done in the car mirror, is Kevyn Aucoin Curling Mascara. I like how easily it comes off at the end of the day.

What about your evening routine?

I walk the Bondi boardwalk at least once a day. Finishing my days by the beach and the smell of salt helps my cortisol drop. Once I’ve put Ralph down, I’ll have a second hot shower, this time a much longer one. I’ll take my time and wash my hair with Davines OI Shampoo and Conditioner, and then apply my organic rosehip oil when I step out. I’ll make a hot tea, take all of my tonics and tinctures, before my partner Josh and I will catch our breath from the day.

You’re probably getting less sleep than ever right now, but what do you take before bed? Is there anything you find helps with sleep?

I’ve been really into organic raw beet kvass lately, which I buy from Broth Bar & Larder in Bronte. It’s great for fatigue, and has helped my skin settle back into equilibrium post-birth as it’s a natural detoxifier. I’ve also done regular acupuncture my entire adult life and swear by it for digestion, immunity, and my quality of sleep (even when I’m only getting a few hours…).

What products do you repurchase the most?

Muslin face cloths (they’re so much softer on your skin than regular wash cloths).Eucalyptus leaves from the farmer’s market to hang in the shower.Westman Atelier Complexion Drops. The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid.Davines OI Shampoo and Conditioner.

Last beauty trend you got sucked into?

Sun-kissed blush! I love the look of flushed cheeks. I use my finger to apply my Westman Atelier bronzing stick or cream blush from the sides of temples all the way down and across my cheeks, and then carry it across my nose to create that “lingered-ten-minutes-too-long in the sun” look without damage.

It’s a Sunday and you’ve got a few extra minutes to do something for yourself, beauty-wise. What products are you reaching for?

Red light. My facialist, Clare at FENN, first introduced it to me and it’s the best bang for your buck when it comes to skin if you’re short on time.

What’s your ultimate beauty indulgence?

A facial, always. It feels like such a treat but my skin is always better in the long-run when I commit to regular facials. Clare is my go-to, we became friends through our appointments together and it’s so special that she’s a mum now too; we swap notes.

Tell me about the beauty direction and skin prep for your most recent Maggie Marilyn campaign?

We shot our latest campaign at my family home in the Bay of Islands and it was daunting being in front of the camera… I wanted the beauty look to reflect that feeling of being in your happy place: skin that doesn’t look weighed down by makeup but instead looks healthy and warm to the touch. That’s how my skin feels in summer when I’m at home with my sisters. Our makeup artist, Fiona Wright, prepped my skin with Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5. This was sealed with the brand’s NMF + Phytoceramides moisturiser. To keep coverage looking natural, Fiona used Kosas Revealer Concealer in place of foundation, and warmed my skin with the Kosas Blush. She also used the MCo XtendLash Mascara which I’d never used before. I’m now obsessed with it.

What act of self-care (skincare, movement, wellness – anything big or small) instantly improves your mood if it’s been a day?

Taking my son down to the beach for a walk or swim. Having the ocean on my back doorstep will never get old.

Who’s beauty, or approach to beauty, do you admire?

Rachel Waller. She’s such a muse of mine and her approach to health and beauty aligns with my own beliefs. I first cast her in our Australian Fashion Week Show in 2023 and was immediately enamoured. She lives her life fuelled by gratitude and adventure, is a proud grandmother and mother, and takes her wellbeing as seriously as she takes her commitment to joy – and all of that radiates through her beauty. The first time we met she smelt like roses and when I asked her about it she said she’s had the same signature scent her whole life, rose essential oil. Heaven.

Want to smell one in a million? Scent layering is the fragrance hack you need to know https://www.russh.com/scent-layering-how-to/ Tue, 16 Dec 2025 01:00:16 +0000 https://www.russh.com/?p=274375 One of a kind.

The post Want to smell one in a million? Scent layering is the fragrance hack you need to know appeared first on RUSSH.

]]>
I’m convinced there is no greater high than the one that comes when a stranger stops you to ask what perfume you’re wearing. The only detail that can elevate this euphoric feeling though, is being able to say, ‘it’s a mix’.

Scent layering is the simplest way to personalise the way you smell. Depending on your technique, it can enhance projection and longevity, or serve up something completely bespoke. Fragrance is one of the most personal tools of expression we have – it’s intimate and says a lot about us. Like tailoring or custom suiting, scent layering indicates inherently great taste (not to mention, a sense of individuality).

Below, I’m explaining how scent layering works, plus some previously gate-kept combinations that deliver unforgettable impact.

What is scent layering?

Scent layering is essentially the art of wearing multiple fragrances at once. This could mean layering two or more individual fragrances, or layering different formats – like body cream, oils, perfume and hair mist – to enhance projection and longevity. There’s no hard and fast rules, the way you personalise is entirely up to you.

Will scent layering make my perfume last longer?

It depends on your method, but technically speaking yes, layering your fragrance will increase its longevity. For example if you use a scented body cream, layered beneath a perfume, and finish off with a hair mist, you’re pretty much guaranteed to smell incredible for hours and hours. It’s a big reason why so many fragrance houses launch scented collections with creams, lotions, oils and mists – they compliment eau de parfums.

How to layer your scents:

As mentioned, you can layer to your hearts desire, but there’s two main layering methods worth knowing about:

1. Layer your signature scent

Many popular fragrances also come as shower gels, bubble bath, body creams and so on. If you’re dedicated to one scent, or just want to increase the intensity of your fragrance, layer shower and body products underneath your perfume. Picture this: Your beauty routine consists of CHANEL Coco Mademoiselle shower foam, body lotion, eau de parfum and hair mist? Say less.

2. Wear two or three fragrances at once to create a custom mix

Another scent layering technique is to choose a few complimentary perfumes and wear them at the same time. Try not to spray them directly on top of one another though, as it can crush or dampen the respective notes. The end result is a bespoke mix guaranteed to get you compliments.

As for choosing what to layer, you can be experimental but safe options are to pair scents with similar notes (for instance, two gourmand vanillas). You can also opt for a soft, skin-like scent (such as Glossier You) with a bolder option. Alternatively you can play perfumer and pair opposing notes – think rose and leather, or a spicy musk with a true floral.

What are some powerful scent layering combinations?

Ellis Brooklyn Vanilla Milk and Diptyque Orpheon

This is one of my favourite pairings. Vanilla Milk is super soft – it’s creamy but not overly sweet. It adds a fluffy richness to the Parisian jazz club vibe of Orpheon.

PHLUR Heavy Cream with PHLUR Vanilla Skin

A TikTok approved pairing for anyone that wants to smell good enough to eat.

DS & Durga I Don’t Know What with Glossier You

If you want to smell like nothing but everything all at once, this is the pairing to try. Think warm cashmere woods, linen, skin, musk and powdery newborn sweetness.

Tom Ford Oud Wood with Le Labo Rose 31

Smoke, leather, thorns and blooming red rose – a formidable fragrance pair.

Byredo Bal D’Afrique & Chloé Eau de Parfum Naturalle

This fragrance pairing layers the intrepid richness of Bal D’Afrique (African marigold, bucchu, violet, cyclamen) with the floral femininity of Chloé. Intoxicating and sure to render you the best-smelling person in any room.

9 illuminating ‘glow drop’ serums that will convince you to ditch foundation https://www.russh.com/best-glow-drop-products/ Mon, 15 Dec 2025 02:00:37 +0000 https://www.russh.com/?p=274513 Embrace the dew.

The post 9 illuminating ‘glow drop’ serums that will convince you to ditch foundation appeared first on RUSSH.

]]>
More and more of us are forgoing a full face of foundation in favour of clean skin, with just the right dose of soft-focused gleam courtesy of glow drops.

Of course, not all glow products are created equal. And the wrong ones can exaggerate unwanted texture and leave an oily film. I’d know, I’ve experimented with more than my fair share. Based on the products that I’ve tried and love, these are our trusted and best glow drops for bouncy, luminous skin.

Firstly, what is a ‘glow drop’?

Not quite a serum, not exactly a primer, not a liquid luminiser – but somehow a mix of all three. Hydrating, glow-infusing, with a pinch of complexion correction. The glow drop is the new era skincare-makeup hybrid product that is making an entire generation rethink their makeup base.

Best glow drops according to our own hands-on testing

1. Drunk elephant B-Goldi Bright Drops

Infused with xx acid and a very small amount of DHA, Drunk Elephant’s glow drops are an inimitable cult favourite that improve the look of your skin as the day goes.

2. RAAIE Sun Milk Drops

This hydrating formula has added sun protection and leaves this skin with a glowing soft-focused finish. They don’t have any bronzing warmth to them so this product is ideal for anyone wanting a neutral base.

3. Caudalie Self-Tan Sun Drops

This liquid glow serum contains a small amount of the active ingredient in fake tanning products, so it adds a gentle warmth to your skin. It works best when mixed in with your moisturiser for an even, bronzed finish.

4. Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Niacinamide Dew Drops

This product works perfectly as a primer under foundations for that extra boost of hydration. Because its slightly sticky, it offer grip for base products to stick to. But I like wearing it on its own. Finish it with a big spray of your favourite face mist for ultra bouncy skin.

5. Glossier Futuredew

This is best used sparingly, I only use half a pump. You can mix it into moisturiser or wear it straight over the top of your skincare. I love how it soft-focuses imperfections and gives a radiant and ultra hydrated look to the skin.

6. Dr. Barbara Sturm Glow Drops

Lightweight and nourishing, this product has light-reflecting pigments and hydrating ingredients to serve up bouncy, primed skin. This is a great one to use under makeup, but works beautifully as a finishing touch too.

7. Pai The Impossible Glow

This natural brand uses pearlescent mica to create its bronzey, light-reflecting pigments. It’s the perfect summer product to add a faux bronzey tone to your complexion, or you can mix it into moisturiser for a more subtle look that sinks into the skin.

8. Naked Sundays CabanaGlo Glow Serum Drops

These leave the most lovely finish on the skin because they have a mineral SPF included. It means they’re wonderfully smoothing. There’s a few different shades and I love the pearlescent one as it’s not super bronzey. It’s perfect for when I don’t want too much warmth in my complexion.

9. Clinique Sun-Kissed Face Gelee Complexion Multitasker

Of all the products on this list, it’s definitely the most pigmented and least like a “drop”. For this reason, I only like to use this mixed into moisturiser, so it feels lighter and more hydrating. Best for medium and light skin tones, this is designed to offer a bouncy, light bronze to the skin.

If you want more glow and hydration, you might like to try our guide to the best products to use if you want to achieve glass skin. Or you might prefer our guide to Korean Beauty which shouts out the brands that do bounce, glow and hydration the best.

25 of the best Korean beauty brands to have on your radar https://www.russh.com/korean-beauty-brands/ Fri, 12 Dec 2025 06:45:37 +0000 https://www.russh.com/?p=160123 Get your skin K-popping.

The post 25 of the best Korean beauty brands to have on your radar appeared first on RUSSH.

]]>
Over the past few years, Korean beauty brands have become a mainstay in bathroom shelves as more and more people outside of Asia discover the power of Korean products. And as many industry experts will tell you, K-Beauty has always very much been about a skin-first ethos, utilising skin-loving, anti-inflammatory ingredients like niacinamide, yuzu, snail mucin, birch, and ginseng, all designed to give glass skin-like results.

If you’re looking to dip a toe into the K-Beauty pool, we’ve compiled a list of all the best of the Korean beauty brands to shop from in Australia right now (and where to get them).

First, What is Korean Beauty or K-Beauty?

K-Beauty is shortened version of Korean Beauty. This simply refers to the unique and advance-style of produced found and produced by South Korea. Beauty is big business in Korea and its citizens gravitate to a porcelain, glassy, hydrated look with a skincare-first approach to makeup. For this reason, many Korean brands are heralded for their innovations in delivering ultra-hydrated results with a glass skin finish.

Is Korean Beauty really better?

Of course, there is no single best beauty brand. It’s all about personal preference.

But for many who are looking for smooth, bouncy and ultra-hydrated skin, Korean Beauty brands can offer something different from products in Western markets which often focus on exfoliation, regeneration and mature skin solutions.

Some people find that Korean Beauty works very well for their skin and skin type. Others could prefer skincare that targets different aspects.

12 perfumes that are just as smoky and intoxicating as Santal 33 https://www.russh.com/santal-33-dupes/ Fri, 12 Dec 2025 03:15:39 +0000 https://www.russh.com/?p=274143 If you love the vibe but want a perfume that's slightly more unique, we've curated the perfect list.

Le Labo’s Santal 33 is a fragrance phenomenon that should be studied. I would argue that it’s just as cult as major players like Miss Dior or Coco Mademoiselle. Maybe it’s not as storied, but it’s just as iconic.

The fragrance, created by New York based perfume house Le Labo, actually started as a candle: Santal 26. Legendary NYC Hotelier Ian Schrager liked it, and so placed it into The Gramercy Park Hotel. It was popular with guests – this was the early 2000s where the fragrance category was overrun with feminine florals and crisp colognes (CK One and Issey Miyake L’eau d’Issey had launched just five years prior). Smoke, wood and witchy notes like incense were essentially unheard of. The demand was palpable and so Le Labo reimagined it as the Santal 33 we know and love today. It was an instant success and basically became the scent of New York in the early 2000s. It changed industry perceptions on gender neutrality, while popularising the niche perfume category. It also established Le Labo as a household name in fragrance.

15 years on, Santal 33 is still a classic. Personally, I love the composition: there’s sandalwood, cedarwood and cardamom. It has a grittiness to it, but it’s overwhelmingly warm thanks to an overdose of musk. It’s smoky but balanced – a perfect synergy of masculine and feminine energy that’s understated but instantly recognisable.

But it is popular – in a room of people, it’s almost guaranteed one of them is wearing Santal. So if you love the vibe but want a perfume that’s slightly more unique, I’ve curated the perfect list. Some are very similar, while others exist in the same world but in a different way. All carry the same nonchalant energy.

The best Santal 33 dupes, below.

Diptyque Tam Dao

This is creamy, smooth and rich in woody notes like sandalwood and cedar. There’s also ginger and coriander for a spicy, slightly meditative edge.

Maison Louis Marie No.04 Bois de Balincourt

Widely known as one of the closest Santal 33 dupes (while still remaining a unique fragrance in its own right), this perfume smells delicious and intoxicating without any heaviness. It’s cosy, spicy and earthy with notes of cinnamon, vetiver, nutmeg and sandalwood. It also comes as a scented oil, if you prefer that format.

Byredo Super Cedar

If you love Santal but want something cleaner and more precise, Byredo Super Cedar is one to try. It’s recognisable as a whole but the notes are obscure (there’s rose, vetiver and musk). If Santal 33 is an American wood cabin, Super Cedar is a Scandinavian one.

Comme des Garçons Wonderwood

Wonderwood is a bolder, rougher take on wood when compared to Santal 33. It’s super dry and unlike those scents that try to imitate nature, the synthetic-ness of this is part of the appeal. You’re guaranteed to smell inherently unique.

Tom Ford Santal Blush

If you want the creamy spice of Santal 33 tempered with powdery florals, Santal Blush is the one. Think of it as a more feminine counterpart with the same ability to solicit compliments.

La Labo Thé Noir 29

Another cult Le Labo scent but slightly lesser known, Thé Noir is also completely unisex with juxtaposing notes of black tea, fig, cedar and musk. My neighbour wears it, and I can always smell him in the hallway.

Matiere Premiere Santal Astral

If Santal had a creamy, gourmand base it would be Santal Astral. With soft almond milk, iris and tonka, it’s delicious and cosy – think of it like cashmere in fragrance form.

Maison Crivelli Papyrus Moléculaire

This has the depth and sophistication of Santal, but instead of wood and smoke, it paints an olfactive picture of leather-bound journals and cigarettes. Think of it as slightly more grown up alternative.

Goldfield & Banks White Sandalwood

Luminous but complex, this fragrance is inspired by the Kimberleys in Western Australia. It marries creamy white Australian sandalwood with Turkish rose, pepper and saffron (one of the key raw materials in Baccarat Rouge) for a fragrance that’s bold but wonderfully bright.

Serge Lutens Santal Majuscule

Serge Lutens is a cult brand in the world of fragrance (it’s a known favourite of the Olsen twins, for starters). Santal Majuscule is regarded as quietly luxurious with precious raw materials like sandalwood, damask rose and cacao. The projection is impressive – it wears on the skin for hours – yet it strikes the perfect balance of quiet warmth and recognisability.

Vilhelm Smoke Show

Slightly less boisterous than Santal, Smoke Show is woody and sophisticated with an air of lightness – perfect for minimalists or those who prefer a perfume that’s only perceptible to those in close proximity.

Aesop Eidesis

Punchy and peppery from the start, Eidesis dries down to a soft, creamy, woody base that’s alluring without feeling obvious. It’s actually inspired by the story of Narcissus, who drowned upon gazing intently into a pool of water at his own reflection. Wear with caution.

More Australian sunscreens may have SPFs lower than advertised https://www.russh.com/zinc-sunscreens-fail-testing-abc-investigation/ Tue, 09 Dec 2025 01:30:42 +0000 https://www.russh.com/?p=273903 A new batch of sunscreens is in the spotlight.

The post More Australian sunscreens may have SPFs lower than advertised appeared first on RUSSH.

]]>
A new batch of more than 30 sunscreens are in the spotlight thanks to an investigation by the ABC.

ABC News has allegedly found that a zinc sunscreen base formula, which failed multiple preliminary tests, is being used across 31 different brands in Australia. This base formula allegedly showed an SPF protection in the low to mid 20s rather than the advertised 50+.

A whistle blower found a zinc base formula tested lower than its claimed SPF

Whistle blower and founder of MooGoo Craig Jones tested his own sunscreen – which used a base from Advance ZincTek – when he noticed problem with a zinc oxide shipment. He discovered that batch was testing at SPF 27 rather than the promised SPF 40. As a result, he had to discard over $400,000 of stock.

After he moved suppliers and contacted the TGA to report his findings, the incident prompted him to look further than just his brand. Jones tested another sunscreen he alleges uses the same Advance ZincTek base formula that failed his first test. Here it received a result of 21 for a product labelled SPF50. Jones then contacted the ABC.

The two companies under scrutiny are base formula supplier Advance ZincTek and sunscreen manufacturer VeganicSKN

Advance ZincTek is deeply connected to sunscreen manufacturer VeganicSKN. They share some directors and ownership interests through immediate family connections. The ABC article alleges VeganicSKN sunscreens use the base formulas from Advance ZincTek – meaning there are 31 potentially affected products.

Additionally, investigators found that all 31 sunscreens share the same regulatory listing number (AUST-L 407959) – a practice that may be illegal.

VeganicSKN has strongly disputed the preliminary test results, arguing the legitimacy of the testing target and that Jones’ test only include five subjects rather than the minimum 10 required by the Therapeutic Goods Administration. While VeganicSKN has provided documents showing SPF results above 50, one of the labs that conducted the tests is owned by the same zinc supplier. This naturally raises conflict-of-interest concerns.

The TGA says it is concerned about the preliminary data and is now considering formal investigation and possible regulatory action.

Why are so many sunscreens allegedly failing post-consumer testing?

The ABC’s investigation follows a Choice investigation from earlier in 2025 which resulted in more than 20 sunscreens being pulled from shelves, owing to widely used base formula that failed SPF testing.

It’s raised question around how sunscreens are tested in Australia. Sunscreens must comply with testing and labelling requirements in the Australia/New Zealand standard for sunscreens, which incorporates internationally recognised ISO standards. But there doesn’t appear to be a requirement as to who can test sunscreens and which labs can test them.

When RUSSH asked the TGA in June of 2025 if sunscreen brands were legally required to use a lab to test their sunscreens, and if so, do those labs have any accreditation they need to accede to, a spokesperson responded with: “In general, sunscreen sponsors (product owners) do not conduct SPF testing in-house. There are limited SPF testing facilities globally, sunscreen sponsors are likely to rely on 3rd party laboratories to conduct these tests.”

It is still unclear whether brands are legally required to use a lab to test their sunscreens, and whether that lab needs to hold accreditation.

Do we have a list of the potentially affected sunscreens?

We currently don’t have a list of the affected products but the ABC has included a picture of some of them in the article around their investigation.

There comes a moment in every morning routine when you swear you just saw your concealer. Then suddenly it’s gone, lost somewhere in the depths of a bag that feels more like a portal, and you’re standing there with an uneven brow situation you definitely didn’t ask for. A universal rite of passage. Which is why we’ve rounded up the makeup bags and vanity cases that actually make sense for how we move through life.

The roomy ones that hold your entire getting-ready personality. The smaller, cuter companions that slide into a work tote without protesting. And the travel options that won’t burst open in transit like a tragic cosmetics crime scene. Consider this your guide to keeping everything in its place, even when you’re not.

If you’re already reorganising your bag, this is usually the moment you start taking stock of your actual beauty kit and the items you reach for every day. The forgotten favourites sitting at the bottom, the products you swore you’d try after seeing them blow up on TikTok earlier in the year. A tidy makeup case has a way of exposing the truth of your routine, and sometimes, it can even be that final push to bring in something new.

It’s a good time of year for that. December has a pace of its own and beauty becomes part of the gifting conversation. Fragrance for the friend who never buys it for herself. A skincare trio for the cousin who keeps asking what you use. Our beauty gift guide covers all of it.

You can also use this moment to revisit the products everyone has been talking about in 2025. We’ve rounded up the standouts, so you can sort the true performers from the passing noise.

Sweat-proof products to keep you cool this summer https://www.russh.com/best-sweat-proof-makeup/ Sun, 07 Dec 2025 01:00:07 +0000 https://www.russh.com/?p=227908 Just because the weather is heating up, doesn't mean you have to compromise on your makeup and skincare routines.

The post Sweat-proof products to keep you cool this summer appeared first on RUSSH.

]]>
It was over 30 degrees in Sydney this week, and we’ve well and truly entered daylight savings territory. The meaning in all this? Summer ishere.

But for all the good (bermuda shorts, 7 pm swims) summer also brings sticky conditions and unbearable humidity – two things not conducive with a fresh, refined beauty look.

But it’s all good, because there’s countless tips, tricks and sweat-proof makeup and skincare product recommendations that I promise will keep you cool this season. Don’t sweat it, or do – the below info will ensure you look and feel good regardless.

Skincare

Sweat-proof skincare doesn’t mean you have to skimp on moisture. Dry complexions might actually find reprieve as the humidity increases (more moisture in the air often equals dewier skin). The rest of us should swap rich, oil-based formulas for lightweight, watery products that will afford hydration without greasiness. That, and plenty of sunscreen.

Hydrating Serums

A serum with humectant ingredients, such as Glycerin, Pentavitin or Hyaluronic Acid, will keep your skin’s water reservoirs topped up. This is the kind of hydration that will plump fine lines and give you a fresh, bouncy feeling – no stickiness or shine. If you want to splurge, I love Dr Barbara Sturm’s Hyaluronic Acid. I’ve also been testing the new Osea Hyaluronic Sea Serum and it’s so silky, you’ll notice an immediate difference. Jocelyn Petroni got me onto the the Ultraceuticals B2 Hydrating Serum years ago and it’s still one of my favourites. And I can’t leave out The Ordinary’s Hyaluronic Acid 2% Serum (cheap, cheerful, effective).

A lightweight moisturiser

A lightweight moisturiser that’s hydrating but not too rich is actually really hard to find. Biologique Recherche Dermopurofiante is incredible if you’re very oily or breakout-prone. It’s mattifying and basically deletes blackheads. Rationale’s No. 2 The Light Creme is a mainstay in my routine (I’d call it mid-weight), plus it’s full of antioxidants to keep you glowy. And if you’re into a one-and-done formula, Augustinus Bader’s The Cream is going to do the heavy-lifting (firms, brightens, repairs damage) while keeping your skin balanced in summer.

Sunscreen

SPF is a summer non-negotiable but so often, people aren’t into the finish. A tip from me is to opt for a mineral SPF instead. Because they use Zinc Oxide, a chalky powder in its pure form, they have a soft matte finish by default. In all my years of trying mineral sunscreens I have never found one that feels dewy all day. They always dry down. Try Summer Fridays Shade Drops Mineral Milk, or Rationale No. 3 The Tinted Serum. If you prefer a chemical SPF, take a look at Ultra Violette Supreme Screen, or Mecca Cosmetica To Save Face. Both offer great protection and a humidity-proof finish.

For your body

Of all the sweat-proof products, Deodorant is probably the most literal. I have spent most of my working life testing ‘natural’ formulas and there’s two I’d recommend: Salt & Stone and Nécessaire. Salt & Stone comes in a Santal & Vetiver scent that’s really good, and it actually neutralises body odour. Nécessaire The Deodorant Gel is genius in that it contains hydroxy acids to gently exfoliate, keeping your underarms fresh and smooth. I also have to mention Tronque, a beautiful New Zealand body brand that just released a roll-on Natural Deodorant with a ‘deo-tox’ ingredient that mimics a muscle relaxant, reducing the nerve activity that triggers sweating. High tech and it comes with rave reviews.

Makeup

There are two ways to approach sweat-proof makeup: you can fight it with matte, long-lasting products or you can lean into the ‘dewy’ finish that high humidity affords. Below you’ll find options for both.

Foundation that actually lasts

There are so many long-wearing, waterproof, sweat-proof foundations out there. My all-time favourite is Estee Lauder Double Wear. It’s a best-seller and provides really nice, fresh coverage that doesn’t pill, transfer or fade. The finish is matte enough to control shine, but not so matte that it looks unflattering. It was my wedding day foundation of choice, actually (and it was 34 degrees). It’s also waterproof, so you can go for a spontaneous swim without ruining your base.

If you prefer something lightweight, Chanel’s Les Beiges Water Fresh Tint is incredible. It’s a watery skin tint with capsules of pigment that burst when you buff it in. It feels like nothing (just cool, a little dewy) but has a surprisingly good amount of coverage.

Prefer a bare face, maybe a little bit of concealer only? I am usually a big Kosas fan but Summer calls for NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer. It has a matte finish and infallible coverage. I use it on breakouts, scars, pigmentation and under my eyes.

Powder that doesn’t feel like powder

Powder is pretty divisive these days; most people are scared it will undo a radiant base. And they’re right. But if we’re aiming for sweat-proof, a little powder is necessary, you just need to choose something modern. My number one recommendation is Rae Morris’ Invisible Mattifier. It’s not a powder but a gel that blurs and sets. I’ve never used anything like it. Other powders that will dispel shine without a chalky finish include Westman Atelier Vital Pressed Skincare Powder and Kosas Cloud Set. Both are really, really good.

A swim-proof mascara

If you want a mascara that stands up to sweat, you can either opt for a waterproof formula, or a tubing one. Waterproof mascaras are, as the name suggests, waterproof. They’re great if you plan on swimming or crying. Tubing mascaras on the other hand create little ‘tubes’ around each individual lash, so instead of flaking or smudging they come off as a singular piece, almost like a stocking. This greatly minimises the risk of smudgy panda eyes, while being easy to remove. In fact, you don’t even need makeup remover for tubing mascaras, just wiggle each lash under warm water and the product will slide right off.

As for waterproof formulas, I love Diorshow. It’s not only actually waterproof, but a really good mascara. Tubing has to be Kevyn Aucoin (the original and arguably the best), or Merit Beauty. The Merit formula is an excellent mascara and claims to be tubing. I don’t think it’s a true tubing mascara, but I’ve been testing it for weeks and it’s yet to smudge.

Lips and cheeks

Want a flushed look, or a stained-effect lip that doesn’t sweat off or require too many touch ups? You need Benefit Benetint (lips and cheeks) and/or Chanel’s Rouge Allure Laque. Benetint is like a weightless raspberry-hued liquid that leaves a just-pinched finish, while the Rouge Allure Laque is a gloss that stains for a long-lasting finish that doesn’t need to be touched for hours.

There’s always been cult beauty products, but since the rise of Instagram and TikTok, the concept of popularity has taken on an entire new meaning. One video has to power to render a single product viral — out of nowhere, it’s sold out everywhere; the subject of every online review or GRWM.

Some of it is unwarranted hype, but for the most part where there’s smoke there’s fire, hundreds of fans, waitlists and rave reviews have to account for something, right? It’s how beauty icons are created.

And so with that being said, I’ve compiled a list of the best viral beauty products in 2025. Some are serious innovations, others are a bit of fun – all of them worth your attention.

Biodance Real Deep Collagen Mask

This cheap and cheerful K-Beauty sheet mask went off online because of the way it turns translucent on the skin, before peeling off to reveal a glassy skin finish. The mask itself is soaked in a serum, but what it really does is push in any prior skincare – think of it as a moisture seal. Perfect overnight or before a big event.

Medicube Collagen Night Wrapping Mask

Similar to the above, this turns into a bit of a seal on the skin – almost like glad wrap – locking in moisture for extreme dewy-ness. The results are somewhat short-lived, but it’s gratifying nonetheless.

Victoria Beckham Beauty The Foundation Drops

The fact these drops have been almost entirely sold out online since the Mecca launch is all the proof we need. At $185 a bottle, the Internet is divided but the immediate glow, sheer but beautiful coverage and associated skincare benefits are something to behold.

Wonderskin All Day Lip Stain Peel Off and Reveal

This is all over TikTok — the blue stain can be painted on and peeled off, leaving your lips a long-lasting shade of berry beneath. For some it’s the perfect natural lip tint, while others like it as a lip combo base.

Avene Cicalfate+ Restorative Protective Cream

Not exactly new, but this French face balm has a cult following (blame it on Hailey Bieber). It’s rich in zinc, copper and French thermal spring water to soothe stressed out, red or irritated skin. Sold.

RHODE Glazing Mist

On the topic of Hailey B, the beauty mogul broke the Internet once again this year with the launch of RHODE’s Glazing Mist. From the campaign (hello, Harris Dickinson) to the glazed skin finish, Bieber continues to have the beauty Internet in a chokehold. Peptide Lip Shape also deserves a spot on this list.

K18 AirWash Dry Shampoo

Dry shampoo is a mostly boring category within beauty but K18 made it a thing with its AirWash formula. The oily scalp community seemingly declare it’s the best on the market.

Makeup Forever Artist Colour Pencil Wherever Walnut

Another Hailey Bieber special but this brown lip liner has also been endorsed by makeup artists (plus, it’s always sold out). Anywhere Caffeine is another popular, universally flattering shade.

MAC Lip Liner in Stone

We’re still firmly in the age of lip liner, and MAC is the original. Cool toned makeup has had a huge amount of attention, and the iconic MAC shade ‘Stone’ fits the bill. It can be used to contour the lips, or other parts of the face including the eyes and nose.

Clear Skin Club Clean Skin Towels

A continuous best seller on Amazon, these towels are designed for acne-prone skin types to avoid the need for bacteria-ridden cloths or face washers. They are biodegradable, as well.

Clinique Almost Lipstick in Black Honey

This has been ‘viral’ before virality was a thing, but Black Honey had its moment in the sun this year thanks to an expanded shade range. The original is a deep pinky-berry hue that transforms based on the natural colouring of your lips. It’s the ultimate no makeup makeup lip product that balances pigment, moisture and ease of use.

Kerastase Gloss Absolu Glaze Drops

Glaze was the flavour of the year, with Kerastase’ viral Glaze Drops ruling the hair category. Light and quickly absorbed, they instantly smooth frizz while instilling reflective shine. Plus, they smell like roses.

PHLUR Vanilla Skin Eau de Parfum

Sweet, sticky perfumes are still the scent of choice for the masses, and PHLUR’s Vanilla Skin takes the (literal) cake. It’s creasy and plush with notes of sugar, sandalwood, cashmere and pink apple – perfume that’s good enough to eat.

Omnilux Contour LED Light Mask

LED light in general was huge this year, and continues to gain traction for a few reasons. Firstly, pending the mask is the right specs, it’s clinically proven to enhance skin quality. There’s also the relaxation benefit, plus the convenience of not needing to leave the house for a clinical treatment. Pending you’re consistent, it’s a worthy investment.

Beaubble Freckle Pen

Faux freckles were big this year and this pen seems to be the Internet favourite for its longevity and natural finish.

Haus Labs Triclone Concealer

Haus Labs finally launched into Sephora this year and the concealer seems to have lived up to its hype. The formula is super dense and creamy, so it conceals anything while remaining natural on the skin.

Merit The Minimalist

Viral for its ease of use and super natural finish, this foundation concealer hybrid is the one to use if you prefer makeup that’s quick, easy and foolproof.

CHANEL has announced Nana Komatsu as its newest Beauty Ambassador. The Japanese actress, who has been a friend of the house since 2016, marries artistic sensibility with delicate beauty — a perfect fit for CHANEL and its beauty codes.

Originally scouted as a model on the streets of Harajuku, Komatsu has gone on to become one of Japan’s most decorated stars. Her breakout came in 2014, when she starred in the gripping film, The World of Kanako. The performance earned her the Newcomer of the Year award at the 38th Japan Academy Film Prize; a testament to her talent early on.

From that point, her cinematic career has been dynamic but fearless: Takafumi Nanatsuki’s My Tomorrow, Your Yesterday, Michihito Fujii’s The Last 10 Years and Martin Scorsese’s Silence (the latter a historical drama co-starring Adam Driver, Andrew Garfield and Liam Neeson). Komatsu was also acclaimed Best Actress at the 2019 Yokohama Film Festival for Akihiko Shiota’s Sayonara Kuchibiru, as well as making her debut at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year for Exit 8(8 Ban Deguchi), directed by Genki Kawamura.

Parallel to her film career, Komatsu has been quietly shaping her presence within fashion. She’s been a CHANEL ambassador since 2016, regularly attending runway shows, events and appearing in campaigns (we especially love this one for Coco Neige). This new chapter within the beauty metier only deepens her relationship with the house.

“I am truly honored to be named Ambassador for CHANEL Beauty,” Komatsu shares. “I believe beauty lies not only in each person’s unique individuality, but also in cultivating inner beauty. To me, CHANEL is a major source of inspiration. It’s been ten years since I became a Fashion Ambassador, and the time I’ve shared with CHANEL is, without a doubt, one of the greatest treasures of my life – it feels like family to me. I am deeply grateful, and I look forward to continuing this journey together.”

The reverence is echoed by CHANEL, who are known for cultivating long-term relationships with those in artistic fields. “Nana embodies a rare and magnetic beauty,” shares Thomas du Pré de Saint Maur, Head of Global Creative Resources, Fragrance & Beauty. “Collaborating with her was a dream I had cherished for many years. Patience, which lies at the heart of our creative convictions, has been rewarded: today, Nana brings to the House an energy and vitality that is perfectly in tune with the spirit of CHANEL.”
