Anne Hathaway's next project is shaping up to be seriously intense. Titled Mother Mary, the film casts Hathaway as a pop star who flees her tour amid an existential crisis and, according to director David Lowery, shooting it was akin to Apocalypse Now.
“At one point Annie broke down and said, ‘I have to apologise, because I think what’s going to come out of me will hurt you.’ And [her co-star, Michaela Coel] took her hands and said, ‘I love you, I trust you,’ ” Lowery recalled to Variety about one scene. “We were in various stages of that for about a week, shooting that scene.”
For proof of exactly how intense things got, A24 has (finally) dropped a trailer and, naturally, we've been watching it on repeat. Below, brush up on everything you need to know about Mother Mary.

What is it about?
The fictional melodrama – penned by Lowery filmed in Germany – stars Hathaway as a pop star who, amid an identity crisis, seeks out the help of an old friend and legendary fashion designer, played by Coel.
In order to create a film about pop music, Lowery and A24 had to enlist the help of some the genre's giants, by way of Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX. Both have created original music for Mother Mary, alongside Lowery's long-time collaborator, composer Daniel Hart.
To announce her involvement in the film, Charli XCX posted this adorable photo to her Instagram.

Who else is in the cast?
Euphoria star Hunter Schafer is set to play Michaela Coel's assistant Hilda, and other notable names like Kaia Gerber, Alba Baptista, Jessica Brown-Findlay and Sian Clifford are also attached to the production.
Both Hathaway and Coel have had a mammoth couple of years. Coel made history with her 2020 series I May Destroy You, becoming the first black woman to win for Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology series at the Emmy Awards, while Hathaway has had something of a mid-career renaissance, with a sequel to The Devil Wears Prada, and threequel to The Princess Diaries, both in the works this year. And creatively, the project marks writer and director Lowery's third film with acclaimed production studio A24, so you basically know it's going to be good
When will it be released?
According to the official posters released earlier today, the film has a release date of April 2026.
